We’ve released a new update to the Stable Pre-Release beta group (and, of course, the weekly), bringing video support, more markdown options, and a bunch of bug fixes. We’ve also refined our design—check it out and let us know what you think!

Cheers,

The Mlem Group

Features

  • Added preliminary video support:
    • .gif, .webp, .mp4, .m4v, and .mov media can now be played by tapping the play button; tapping elsewhere opens the media viewer.
    • Currently the only controls are tap to play/stop.
    • Planned features, roughly in order include:
      • Autoplay
      • .gifv support
      • Thumbnails for .mp4/.m4v/.mov/.gifv content
      • Pausing
      • Scrubbing
  • Updated design to use rounded rectangles
  • Added the ability to edit posts
  • Added more Markdown buttons: inline link, code block, and user/community/instance links
  • Added a new comments indicator
  • Added instance uptime statistics
  • Expanded post can now be refreshed
  • Added sign up prompts for new users
  • Expanded posts now show if they’ve been crossposted with links to the crossposts
  • Added a page for rendering deeply nested comment threads. Navigating to a comment (e.g., from inbox) will open this page.
  • Added the ability to create crossposts from the post share menu

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed iPad confirmation dialog appearing in the wrong place
  • Fixed iPad sidebar navigation
  • Fixed Markdown blocks would sometimes being truncated
  • Fixed mark read on scroll not respecting the setting
  • Fixed an issue preventing swipe actions on the account list and subscription list views
  • Fixed some crashes

The preliminary video support is exciting! Don’t forget an option to autoplay, please.

Sorry to harp on this again, but some of us really need a pure black dark mode to make the contrast ratio between text and background comfortable for reading.

Autoplay is planned–forgot to add it to the planned features. It’ll likely be iOS18 only.

Pure black is also in the works.

Eric’s posted the links :) Worth noting is that Mlem v2 doesn’t yet support mod/admin stuff, so if you use Mlem for administration duties you may want to consider waiting until the full release.

Then I guess you’re really doing everything from scratch. I just tried stable beta and it looks really good. There are some small things, but I guess that’s the reason why it’s beta :) Yes, I was using it for moderation, but I’m gonna happily wait.

I just realized there are Markdown buttons too :)

I’m glad you like it :) Yes, we’re re-doing almost all of the code from scratch. It’s a lot of work but we’re getting there!

Yes! You can join the weekly beta, which gets an automatic build every Friday, or the stable beta, which gets more polished updates as we complete development cycles.

It should be back now on the weekly TestFlight :)
