The cocaine was hidden in banana boxes stacked inside a shipping container near Hamburg’s port. Police said the drug haul was the result of weeks of undercover investigation.
Police in the port city of Hamburg have made several arrests after seizing more than two tons of cocaine.
Authorities estimate the drugs have a street value of around €100 million ($112 million).
“This is an outstanding success and one of the largest seizures in an ongoing operation,” Hamburg’s Interior Minister Andy Grote said.
Police said they found the cocaine on Wednesday afternoon when they searched a shipping container in the district of Rothenburgsort, near Hamburg’s port. Inside, they allegedly found the cocaine hidden in banana boxes.
Some time ago, they found 95kg of cocaine in banana boxes in a supermarket here in Germany. I imagined a mafioso opening banana box after banana box in his hideout, and keep finding nothing but bananas ;-)
These news are just a joke. The police talks like they made the big catch, but AGAIN it was the work of other people. In this case some random underpayed person who found cocaine in the bananas at the supermarket. There was a documentary about their last big cocaine busts, they always just got lucky or had external tips.
What percentage of illicit imports is this bust? Does it even make a dent? Not to sound like a party pooper… but why do we even still care about this?
They found around 35 tons last year. It had no impact on the market at all. Street prices and availability didn’t change.
