Why do protestant unionists in northern ireland insist they are “anglo saxon lowland scots” and not celtic irishmen?

    Early 1600s

    Settlers (“planters”) sent over to create a colony/plantation. Given stolen land to tempt them over.

    Hence the North now has two ethnic groups: descendants of the planters and descendants of the aborigines.

      They are. Different ethnicity. Different language-group. Different ancestors. They’re foreigners whose ancestors came here.

      Just like blue-eyed Europeans living in America are not Native Americans.
