“History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes”
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is the first far-right party to win a state election in Germany since the Second World War, giving it unprecedented power, even if other parties are sure to exclude it.
Voters in two closely watched elections in the former communist east made their dissatisfaction with Germany’s mainstream political parties clear, putting the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party in the top spot in Thuringia, with 32.8% of the vote, and second place in Saxony, with 30.7%, according to final results.
The leader of the AfD in Thuringia, Hoecke is one of Germany’s most controversial far-right politicians and was fined twice this year for deliberately using a banned Nazi slogan.
The upcoming government formations will probably take a long time, and the outcome is completely uncertain.
Edit:
While I understand the source for data displayed is important, it’s a bit random in this case, but here:
- Invasion of Poland: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invasion_of_Poland
- Election results in Thüringen Germany showing the AfD as the winner: https://www.bundeswahlleiterin.de/en/europawahlen/2024/ergebnisse/bund-99/land-16.html
- The calculation between the two dates has to be done by yourself. ;)
Just a heads-up: The fact that they got more votes than any other party doesn’t automatically mean that they’ll lead the government. An anti-fascist coalition is still possible if the other parties work together. It will be difficult since the conservative party will have to form a coalition with three leftist parties. But it isn’t impossible.
One of those leftist parties BSW is almost as fascist. They want to stop supporting Ukraine and get back to buying gas from Russia. I’d put them in the tankie camp.
BSW are nearly equalky obnoxious. So fuck them and their supporters as well…
You know liberals opposing communists (and working with fascists) is how Hitler got into power right?
They are not communists, though.
I know they probably do suck, but they’re better than literal fascists
Too bad there’s no other options, just those two parties
Correct, the options are for CDU, BSW, and either Die Linke or SPD to form a coalition, or AFD to form a coalition.
I find it difficult to imagine that BSW could be worse than CDU, whom they’ll have to form a coalition with, let alone AfD.
They’re not.
They’re practically the same but in red instead of brown

I wouldn’t always count on conservatives siding with the left just to prevent the far right from having power. The conservatives sympathize with the far right more than people give them credit for. Conservatives naturally drift toward the right. They will eventually openly support them.
The fact that they got more votes than any other party doesn’t automatically mean that they’ll lead the government
Yeah this was my thought too. The word “win” in this context is fairly ambiguous so I won’t say it’s used wrongly here, but I will say it’s probably better to use it to refer to the party that actually ends up forming government. That might be AfD, but at 32% they’ll need to find at least 18% of seats to be their junior partner first.
We humans are really fucking stupid sometimes.
A very dark day for Germany.
I would very, very quickly analyse the material conditions that have led to this and take massive steps to rectify the issue.
Behind the schedule, I guess

I think that’s a bit random in this case, but I did my best…
The main message is AfD is winning, which has been at least all over the news in Germany and I guess also in international media. And then comparing two dates, and the date of the invasion of Poland (and the start of WWII) should be well known in Europe?
But I did my best to fulfill your request.
@genfood@feddit.org This post seemed like you copied a social-media post — you could have just linked there. Also, thanks for your updates!
(Fwiw, I never questioned whether this graphic is accurate.)
There wasn’t a link to a source either. And I doesn’t like to link to a META platform.
I think it is okay the way it is.
I realize FB/Instagram are bad & they encourage creators to put links in the bio, which is bullshit. However, copying from FB/Instagram without attribution to the original channel still seems like the worse option.
Blame all of it on left, they fucked up badly
You can think whatever you want about left parties, but I’m still going to blame people who voted for fascists for fascists winning the elections.
The problem is that there is no real credible left in Germany. The so-called “center-left” are anything but left in the most important economic aspect, and the economically left parties are rightfully very small, because they are otherwise a very odd bunch ranging from mere Putin bootlickers to outright Stalinists.
I agree with some of what you say, but I think the center-left would probably be seen as more left-leaning if they weren’t constantly forced to govern with a neoliberal ankle bracelet on. The popularity of the Greens would also be higher if Conservatives hadn’t declared them as their “main adversary” while there are literal fascists sitting in parliament.
The so-called centre-left chose this neoliberal bracelet round their ankle by themselves. If you look back in history further than the last federal election in Germany, you’ll find that one of the harshest social cutbacks in post WW2 German history, the “Agenda 2010” was instituted by this so-called “centre-left”, namely a Red/Green coalition under Schröder/Fischer all on their own, without any FDP fig leaf to blame.
The FDP with their well known and predictable antisocial lobby policy having been invited into the current coalition is just a convenient fig leaf for the SPD and the Greens to pretend that they are still somewhat left, while in reality, there isn’t anything substantially left left in them.
They do run a hollow and shallow brand of feelgood leftism for a small privileged bubble that doesn’t need to worry about hard left topics like working conditions, cost of living, and distribution of wealth.
We had decades of largely conservative/moderate-right government. So I don’t really see how “blame the left” applies.
weimar republic II
I wanted to make an “Electric Boogaloo” joke here, but they all came out horribly.
Maybe with more concentration we could get a joke 🤔
That’s what I was trying to avoid
