Curious as to how many others do this, or if I am just crazy. Anyone else buy physical copies of games and movies and play/watch a pirated version to keep the original product sealed? Do you have a different method or do something similar?

I kinda do this. I buy physical media for things I enjoy but still pirate for accessibility reasons. I only have one Blu-ray player (PS5), for example, but I’m not gonna shuffle it around the house to watch a movie I own on the other TVs. The same goes for games. I pay for the games I want but, if it’s an Ubisoft game or something with a secondary launcher other than Steam, I play the cracked versions because there is no benefit to those extra DRM systems to me as a player.

That means some of the movies/games I own are unopened but that’s more like a secondary benefit to me rather than my primary motivation.

Yes. I do this with switch games, in 10-15 years time those games will still be worth what I paid, if not more. I have some collectors editions and limited runs that are already worth 3-4x what I paid for them

I’m ashamed to admit that I had never ever bought a movie, a music album, a game or anything similar.

It’s all a matter of disposable income and your principles. I will pirate most software if I can. If I’ve used it for a few years I’ll buy them official version. I only own a few movies, like Reservoir Dogs and The Big Lebowski. Sometimes I’ll buy a record I like on vinyl. Now a days it’s not really about getting the content, it’s about wanting to support and contribute to the artists and creators who built this stuff.

I download comics/manga then buy paper version to support author. I wish every authors would have patreon, PayPal or else so I can give a bit more to author directly as they are getting crushed by editors.

I sometimes buy a physical book but end up pirating a copy to my ereader so I can read in bed easier and use the dyslexic font. Makes me a bit sad that the books don’t get those creases in the spine from being read. Just looks like I own a bunch of books I didn’t read

    Done that.

But I’ve also done it the other way around. Saw how many DLC are there for cities skyline and then saw it on firgirl. You know the rest. Call me crazy but I did bought the base game and few DLC. But I always preferred playing the fitgirl version

And then there’s me, I play the base games that I paid for and then homebrew the sh*t out of it (cheats, amiibos, whatever)

Why not? It is legal in some countries(or all?), to “reclaim” a digital copy if you own the original. Who would jugde you?

i´ve pirated the ebook version of physical books I´ve already owned. i also down music from albums I also owned because I was too lazy to burn the CDs. i also emulated 3ds games so I could played them on my PC while transferring my safe files there to keep playing the game where I was left off
