I know we’re all anxious for Sync for Lemmy. I also know there’s a lot that goes into getting Sync ready as it transitions from Reddit to Lemmy. It isn’t a process many of us are all that familiar with or… well, let’s face it, we wouldn’t have a community waiting impatiently for our app.
The beloved ljdawson has always provided, not only a feature rich and completely customizable experience, but a sturdy and dependable app, free of most of the bugs and issues many of the others couldn’t. Link handling, sharing options, mod tools… we had the luxury of taking for granted. Luxuries that the list of fledgling Lemmy apps can’t begin to offer because of the reason why I can’t wait for Sync for Lemmy, and that’s the primary reason we all should be happy to…
I’m currently using my mobile browser to access Lemmy. Every app, from the official Jerboa to Connect to Thunder and Wefwef and many others in between, have their strengths and weaknesses, individually, but one trait they all share: the bugs in communication with the Lemmy platform as it develops ahead of them. It feels like their developers are so anxious to push their app that that don’t, and due to its ever-developing nature, CAN’T address some of the disconnects that make their app unpleasant to use and this is exactly why, as much as I am missing an app that delivers my fix for content, I am willing to wait for Sync. LJD has, in the past, proven that a dependable experience is an important feature of his app and if a little more time is required to deliver that? I’m happy to give it to him. Because what use is a Sync-like UI if many functions slide an error message from the bottom with little more than some html as explanation? Or an attempt to submit a post doesn’t even offer somewhere to input the link to your content? Or the myriad of other standards Sync so graciously allowed us to become accustomed to?
I don’t write articles for some tech site, so this was probably long winded and mostly unnecessary but I felt like, maybe, some others are stuck between checking for the email to finally get a solid Lemmy app daily and being completely willing to give as much time as needed for an experience that isn’t so… exhausting. It’s a tough spot to be in, especially if you share the opinion that a solid Lemmy app will really make this whole thing happen. For now, this is the only place we can be, so whether we like it or not, patience in the appreciation that a little extra time may do a LOT more good than just satisfying our individual content addictions is the side I’d recommend we all remain on. LJD, thanks for what you’re doing, take all the time you need…
Oh, fine. Be the grownup in the room. 😜
I am becoming that more than I want to be! Time drags us along 😅
I’ll download Sync for Lemmy the second it’s available. I use liftoff right now and it’s better than using Lemmy raw, but it doesn’t match the cleanliness of Sync. Genuinely believe that third party devs like LJD are going to be the saviors of this platform. Sync has always been great and ahead of the curve. Ready to have it as my normal app again.
I think that’s the point I should have gone into more. What is going to make the “migration” happen, in my opinion, is tying it together and delivering the same ability to browse content with a simplification that keeps the fediverse from overwhelming those in transition. Our patience and support enable LJD to provide that, I think.
Using my first comment on Lemmy to say that I’m currently using Connect but will be switching to sync as soon as it’s available. Sync was my favourite Android app hands down and I can’t wait for that experience to come to Lemmy
Honestly, wefwef web app is super close to a native experience. Even better than Connect in my opinion
It’s sooo good! And open source! So fun to watch the development
Also, don’t know how this would work, but it seems like the best route is going to be making a sync instance or teaming up with another well federated instance. If you could just download Sync and use Lemmy with a quick sign up with no thoughts about what instance you use, it would be amazing. Could change instances obviously, but I think it’s the best way to get good user experience.
I like it! seeing as a lot of the “drag” is with overloaded instances, whether by massive influx or bot accounts.
(It would require additional, and monthly, monetary support though)
Yeah, this is assuming that Sync becomes a paid app. It would require money to keep it from being overwhelmed, but a lot of Sync’s best ideas would benefit a lot from its own instance.
I think it would also better justify paying for the app, since a lot of the other popular apps right now are open source projects. Monetizing Lemmy apps just seems harder than Reddit, it doesn’t seem like there’s much you can realistically charge for other than development, and all the competition is developing for free. I’m okay with paying for development, but there aren’t ads to take away anymore. It doesn’t seem like there’s a way to actually upgrade someone’s Lemmy service with money without hosting. I’m totally okay with paying for Sync even without this, however I don’t know if other people would be willing enough to make Sync’s development financially sustainable for our favorite dev.
I think over the next few months we are going to see quite the pace of changes in lemmy technically, as new features are introduced. I would be careful with saying you’re happy to wait because something stable will be the result. I think it’s going to be a case of racing to keep up and, despite the developers best intentions, it will have bugs too. Hopefully over time it will be less blatantly obvious than now with other clients, but don’t give up on sync when it launches and is not the sync for reddit experience you’re used to! I’m sure he’ll get there in the end :)
🥇
There’s plenty of issues with the backend of Lemmy itself that are being worked on.
I am not sure whether it would be better for Sync for Lemmy to wait for these core issues with the Lemmy platform to be resolved (e.g account migration) or to release early and potentially be off-putting for people trying out the Lemmy platform.
I’m not going anywhere, I’ll be here waiting, for however long it takes the dev to release Sync for Lemmy.
Is this an IOS app or android? Sorry for the lack of knowledge. Memmy just released on the App Store and is great for consuming, mod tooling hopefully will follow.
Sync for Reddit was an Android app, so I am assuming Sync for Lemmy will be also just be for Android.
Noted. Android. For those IOS users out there, search the App Store for “Memmy for Lemmy” it’s not half bad, and is a native app. Wefwef is probably , maybe, better at the moment but as a web app suffers from lack of control being able to overpower IOS native actions.
