After saying goodbye to RIF and reddit, it’s time for me to move on. So far I’ve used 4 apps for Lemmy and this is my personal ranking:
-
wefwef.app. Very clean design, works well and smooth experience. Overall the best implementation so far.
-
Connect/Liftoff (tied). Both are solid, I prefer Connect’s sidebar and options but I prefer the design of the posts and comments on Liftoff. When the comments stack in Connect it looks awful IMO.
-
Jerboa. As a first option it was good but after so many timeouts, other design issues and multiple errors I kinda gave up on the app. After its polished I’ll give it another try.
I’ve found it to be a toss-up between Jerboa and Thunder. Jerboa is more feature-complete and stable (as far as how gracefully it deals with server errors) at this point and has a tolerable UI, but Thunder has a lot of UI touches that remind me of Reddit Is Fun, like a top bar that remains fixed when you scroll, a compact feed mode that keeps elements consistently lined up (even for posts without a thumbnail), and comment level indicators that (like RiF and Lemmy’s web UI) display one line per comment level rather than making you memorize colors or guesstimate how far the bar is indented. There is some stuff makes it clear that Thunder is an iOS-first application that essentially gets ported to Android, like the bottom nav buttons, but I think that’s a small price to pay for an app that gets so much else right and seems to be headed in a, IMO, a very good direction.
