I can try my hand at porting holo to Lemmy and making it send posts here. What say you, mods? @N3DSdude@lemmy.ml @Nami@lemmy.ml
Well… that was easier than expected! I’m done porting holo (link) – now I’m just waiting on the mods to contact me so we can decide on how (and if) we should set the bot up.
Quick work! Well done.
I’d love to see this community grow, and having automatic places for discussion would certainly help it along.
Just so you know, there is a second anime community on lemmy.world here: https://lemmy.world/c/anime
Might try asking there as well.
Yeah I think I’ll do that since it appears that the mods on this community are taking a break right now.
Paging @vole@lemmy.world: would your community be interested in testing out a port of holo bot for automated episode discussions?
EDIT: As of yesterday, my home instance has started blocking lemmy.world for some unknown reason, so I won’t be able to reach out to the anime community over there until we figure out what’s going on 🤷
OK, I think my comments are federating now! Let’s try that again…

good work, but I’ll probably end up rolling my own bot for !anime@lemmy.world
Are you sure? There’s no instance block on either of them:
A day or two back a lot of smaller instances were temporarily defederating from the large instances to clear a message cache that was slowing down the whole fediverse, then refederating again. Just growing pains stuff on a system that never had to scale like this before.
I’m willing to bet they were just caught up in one of those purges.
Yeah it was a temporary thing, only lasted about a day or so. You can see further down in this thread that the !anime@lemmy.world moderator turned me down, though
Awesome! Seeing that pretty simple PR has me tempted to look at useful tools and bots to try porting over here for a few communities. Maybe I’ve just found something to do this weekend.
Hey, that would be very helpful!, Thanks!
Agreed, what r/anime had made it nice to discuss on a consistent basis (when it was consistent lol)
An ambitious person could probably fork https://github.com/r-anime/holo and shimmy or re-do the API calls to have it target one (or more) Lemmy communities.
Looks like another user here (chaorace) already did it, just waiting for a response from mods.
I think there’s a wrapper for Reddits API, might actually be pretty easy.
I forked r/anime’s holo bot (u/AutoLovepon) and swapped it to Lemmy’s API. It should be good to go (a second pair of eyes might be nice, I’m not perfect!) I PM’d the mods, if they give the go-ahead it can be up and running in probably an hour. Code here for your pleasure, let me know if I missed something
Strongly agreed. There’s a saucenao bot for hentai already, we need one for anime discussions too
Someone had their priorities up.
And something else.
Not complaining it’s useful in my comm 🗿
Yeah I’ve been using the anime discussion bot as my “anime reminder”
Having one would be really nice
Agreed. Hopefully as more people migrate to lemmy, someone will port the previous bot or make a new one.
Not quite sure about this. Honestly, this community is way too small to have lively discussions every anime episode that airs. The home page might just look like the episode bot spamming lots of posts with around 3 to 4 comments. We need to get bigger as a community first before this.
The community won’t get bigger because we come to discuss anime and then there is no anime discussion thread.
You’ve got a very optimistic outlook. Let’s hope you’re right about the community actually getting bigger if we have episode discussion threads. Worst that can happen is we end up with bot spam and empty threads.
would be very useful
Ironically, reddit has apparently blocked the r/anime bot. (Presumably related to all their api changes.)
I also agree, especially as we enter a new season and people are trying to figure out what to watch.
maybe this can be useful https://lemmy.world/post/913918
