I’ve thought about iron on patches (or in jean colours), before to provide a bit of a buffer and prevent the jeans rubbing directly, but haven’t tried it yet.
I use patches sewn on the inside when they wear, but it is a bit of a pain sewing it as it’s a hard location for the sewing machine to reach. The stitching provides extra reinforcement too, and when sewn in matching thread it is not really visible.

Agree with this - I’ve used this method in the past & helps to extend the life of jeans for a bit.
