PSA to remind people to not let their mind imagine crazy scenarios.

Friend had been distant all week and not replying to texts so I thought they’d had enough of me or I’d said something wrong.

Sent them a text saying “Hey. If you’ve got a few free minutes today can you call for a quick chat?” Less than half an hour later they called me and I got to hear about all the crap going on in their life and it cheered both of us up.

Sometimes people just retreat into themselves when life gets hard or hectic and need a friend to draw them out.

    Be that friend.

I feel like retreating and I guess I have been hiding away from all my friends and family though last night I reached out to my dad because I felt like I had to finally.

This place is my last bastion of contact with people because I’m finding it real hard of late and want to hide away and disappear quite honestly.

Just I wished I had listened more to my partner.

She told me to stop paying for her medical stuff incase I had an emergency or something happened and now I’m in that spot where my basic needs are suffering. (Washing machine)

But what sort of a partner would I be if I didn’t try my best to help her?

Yeah. I think about what I had done and keep replaying it and cursing myself for choosing or making a decision.

If I didn’t try and wash my oodie I wouldn’t have broken my washing machine.

To think about what’s ahead as well, I know it might not seem like a big problem but it’s one of the few comforts I didn’t want to go without.

I guess maybe what I might do is I wash and taking my stuff to a dryer and pay for the use of a dryer.

Yeah reaching out can be hard when struggling.

Good that you could find it in you to reach out. It takes strength. Many won’t reach out at all and just suffer in silence for an eternity.

My friend tries so hard to be the strong and reliable father, husband, and son, and just soldiers on.

He forgets to reach out for someone to help him cause he’s too busy helping everyone else.

My washing machine broke halfway yesterday which is why I reach out to my dad, I was anxious and needed to talk because I’m financially at rock bottom having had to support my partner with her medical bills for the past 3 and a half years.

Mind you I haven’t come up with a solution other than to see how I can handle drip drying wet clothes first or finding cheap or free replacement.

I’ll have to see what happens when i do the next wash and see what happens.

Ever with reaching out it doesn’t help with the problems other than airing them out.

              I hope so.

With my dad he sometimes tries to overcompensate because he wasn’t around when I was growing up and feels like it was a missed chance so his input can come to be a little heavy sometimes.

A photo of my shell pasta, mushrooms, chorizo, zucchini, onion, garlic, chives and chilli flakes. I forgot the tomatoes. I called it “everything that was in fridge went into my dish”. It tasted way better than it looks.

I’ve finally succumbed to the reddit API changes.

Lemmy is still a bit strange to me, but I think I’m finally getting it to the point of being similar to what I was seeing on Reddit (albeit with much fewer users and therefore less content).

I’m glad to see the Melbourne daily thread be active here.

Seeing how few users there are on Lemmy also makes me feel like I want to be more active?! I was much more of a lurker on Reddit.

      Welcome!

I think once any group gets too big a lot of people end up just stepping back and watching. On Reddit I always felt that it wasn’t worth contributing, if you didn’t get a popular reply on quickly it would end up sinking and no one would see it. The fast and loud people had lots of entertaining conversations, but there was not much space for the slow and thoughtful. You are not the first person to say you lurked on Reddit but felt you could contribute here. 🙂

I was also more of a lurker, but it is a lot less intimidating to make a comment or post here. Too many trolls, automatic downvoters and “akshually” types on Reddit. Welcome aboard!

Totally! I always hated that the conversation for something is already in full swing, so your comment wouldn’t be seen by a lot of people. It’s also why I like to contribute more in the DT because on the Reddit one it always felt like reading every comment was so daunting. But being able to have not many people here (with most of the comments being in replies) I can at least catch up when I get home from work or during my lunch break.

Including the early thread with 30 comments, we are still at over double the activity compared to the old r/Melbourne subreddit.

I hope those who don’t go to the old sub frequently can find there way here.

Reports from a couple of mates who use it say they find this one buddy and slow to load. I assume they’re on a phone. Any ideas or can I inform them of improvements.

Still, this place kicks it’s butt for content also. The old daily thread seems to be a lot of the same questions people posted as posts before the great reddit blunder of 2023 which would pretty much be instantly downvoted to the bottom. Loud bangs, tailgating drivers, choppers over reservoir etc.

I feel like we flhave a natural filter that keeps the ruder Facebook users there. I would just suggest giving Jerboa a try, put the time into setting it up and subscribing to C/Melbourne+ a few major communities.

I originally made an account with lemmy.world. everything was fine until there was a big influx of users on that instance, then it all slowed down. I then made an account with aussie.zone which is clearly a much smaller instance. Much much quicker now.

If they are iPhone users point them towards the wefwef PWA - https://wefwef.app/posts/lemmy.world/all . It’s basically Apollo through a web app.

If Android, Connect or Jerboa are the best apps currently, with RIF and Sync to release Lemmy versions within a month or so.

Anyone got breadmaker recs? His Lordship hath discovered if one decomissions an old appliance, one should do so after buying a motherfucking replacement honestly dipshit why did you do that???

    Ahem.

We do a lot of pizza dough, some of it quite dense, so looking for one with the kind of paddle you uusually only see at Pride. Or with YAOI branded on it.

In a pinch you just breadmake to the second rise, then shape and plonk in a pan of your own delight and finish off in the oven. Bonus: you don’t get paddle holes

i have a kitchenaid but i just mix pizza dough by hand (1-2KG flour at a time) in a large cambro tub, just using the ken forkish’s “flour water salt yeast” methods. if you autolyse the dough and use 70%+ hydration its pretty easy to do by hand.

I was gonna say you can still do that, but I forgot that I’m the peasant machine getting the slowed proofed dough out of the fridge in the middle of the night so it doesn’t walk all over the bench, and chucking it in the preheated oven at some ungodly hour to get back out of bed 45 minutes later to beautiful fresh sourdough. That’s me. I’m the peasant machine. But it’s sooo gooood. I do have an old bread machine that I now use to make jam in.

Spending my Sunday morning doing a job application because it won’t happen during the working week. It’s rare for good roles to come up in my field and this one sounds perfect, so going for it.
