I think that independence is overrated; the only way to attain proper independence is to live off the grid.

Just moving your shelter from your parents doesn’t give you independence; it just shifts the care taker of the shelter. You still have to rely on other people not killing you.

    High housing cost and unemployment in Western countries makes independent living impossible without proper government support. The White-settler colonists in America are lucky that they have government to subsidize cheap land by robbing from Native Americans and forcing enslavement of Africans.
