Square Enix has revised its approach to PC and console game development, and absorbed ¥22.1 billion (approx $140.9 million) in what it calls “content abandonment losses.”

Made up scenario because I don’t know what’s in their pipeline, but this would be like seeing FF7 Remake not meeting expectations while Palworld thrives, and deciding to can the FF8 reboot they’d already floated millions into and instead redirecting their entire workforce to adding guns to the their Minecraft knockoff Dragon Quest Builders.
I think they cancelled a bunch of projects in development, and they are writing off the cost.
