Hi all. I’ve got an older #computer running #Windows10, and I’m thinking about putting #Linux on it since I’ve always wanted to try it out and think this computer might run better with Linux. I read a topic on audiogames.net about Linux #accessibility, and I saw a few recommendations for #distros to try out. To any #blind Linux users, is #NixOS a good one for a beginner, or should I try #LinuxMint or #Ubuntu? Also, what’s the best way to install Linux and replace #Windows? Thanks.

@RareBird_15 @mastoblind @accessibility @main I am using #LinuxMint myself for many years, and yes, the performance is considerably better than with Windows. However, I am sorry to say, that accessibility for blind people, i.e. lacking support for screen-readers for the desktop and pdf-readers may be a show stopper for you. If anything, try the newest distributions with gnome or kde. It would be great if you could share your experience.
@goebbe @RareBird_15 @mastoblind @accessibility @main orca was posted into my TL I am not blind so no idea if it’s good, but worth looking at?

@RareBird_15 @mastoblind @accessibility @main Ubuntu 24.04 (yr.month) will be released today. Agree w recommendations for Linux Mint, which is based on Ubuntu. An update to Mint based on 24.04 will follow this summer. You can try a live boot version (running from a USB drive).
You’ll need to make Bios changes. FWIW I recommend against dual booting. Get a 2nd drive. Windows can’t be trusted not to trash your Linux installation & it will make passing on PC easier.
1st thing to learn: Timeshift.
@mastoblind @accessibility @main @GoatsLive Okay I’ve got a USB drive with the ISO flashed onto it. What’s the most accessible way to boot from it? My mom is here but she doesn’t understand much about tech so I’d rather not ask for her help.
@RareBird_15 @mastoblind @accessibility @main I have no experience myself of considering accessibility on the operating system. I run Linux Mint (I run LMDE version, but I would recommend the standard version, if you go for Mint). As I recall, elementary OS has focused on being good re accessibility, but again I really do not know myself. What do you say, @danirabbit ?
@hehemrin @RareBird_15 @mastoblind @accessibility @main @danirabbit any thoughts on window managers?
@RareBird_15 @mastoblind @accessibility @main my laptop was getting really slow with windows 10 and also not applicable to upgrade to 11. I downloaded Linux Mint and put it on a usb. Went into my bios so that it would select the usb. You can then run Linux mint from the usb to test for funnies. I then installed Linux mint from that usb. My laptop runs fast faster for all the everyday things I require like web browsing, documents and mail.
@RareBird_15 @mastoblind @accessibility @main the trickiest bit was with bios and all the options to pick up the usb. Also the first burner I tried to put Linux mint on the usb didn’t work so I had to use a different burner - sorry can’t remember what it was - but I can have a look
