I think this also shows why a lot of white sexpats feel “oppressed” in China. Because they aren’t given special treatment, they aren’t treated as superior to non-whites like they are at home, so they feel offended by equality.

I definitely think that’s a big part of it. I knew a guy who used to live in China and left around 2020 because it became too nationalist according to him. When I pressed on that it was basically what you say, that people weren’t deferential to him anymore and he wasn’t treated like a celebrity for being white.
