The first glance at the baby elephant in the dress/blanket made me remember the news story about the village (Malaysia?) that kept a shaved baboon as the town prostitute, and now I’m starting to think this whole “internet” thing may be a bad idea.
As a joke right‽
I wish it was a joke… I’d look it up, but that’s going to be a bad impact on my Google algorithm.
The Internet here isn’t the problem, the people in that village are the problem. They would be doing that regardless of if the Internet knew about it, if anything it’s good we now know about these things. Someone might actually do something about it now.
I love elephants, especially baby elephants. They are cute and playful AF.

Aren’t infant trunks non-prehensile at that age? Do they just fling it around until they can catch it in their mouth?
So, I have no clue, and when I googled I found this - mind you, this is just from Quora:
While a baby elephant’s trunk is not as strong or fully prehensile as an adult’s trunk, it still has some grasping ability from an early age. It can hold onto its mother’s tail or body to support itself and gain stability while it explores and learns to use its trunk.
Huh, I guess that answers that. Thanks!
You’re welcome! Safe Lemmy travels to you :)
Reminder to not let your kids suck their thumbs or use pacifiers for too long - else you risk your child developing problems with their teeth, posture, swallowing and many others. Not even touching upon “improper” articulation of language sounds
Thumb sucking is the worst. Even when they are convinced to actively try to stop it still happens in their sleep and the nail polish is useless in my experience. Just leads to a kid spitting in the corner. Ultimately leads to a thumb sucking prevention device and expanders costing thousands of dollars to correct over the course of a year or two. My second son had a pacifier because I was able to assist meaningfully in weaning him off of that. I was not permitted to chop off my first sons pacifier.
I assume US citizens have it even worse with this. Here in Germany, your insurance will likely pay for most medical expenses that’d be required for a child with these problems, ie. SLT, ergotherapy, maybe osteopathy etc, but you’re kinda fudged if they don’t.
Have you noticed any problems that came with your first-born using their pacifier for a longer period of time or did everything go ok there?
My first born wouldn’t accept a pacifier over his thumb and we didn’t know well enough to press the issue. With insurance it cost $3500 that included getting him fitted with a device to stop the thumb sucking, once that behavior was kicked he was fitted with an expander, top one required manual adjustment every week or two depending on ortho assessment. We would go in every month or two to monitor progress along with the occasional trip because an expander broke. He is currently without expander and things have been great for a couple months but in June we go in to determine phase 2 way ahead after things have time to settle, braces likely.
My youngest is five years younger, he was the pacifier user, scheduling his initial evaluation is on my to do list before we go back in June so I can’t speak to a medical difference yet.
I could tell my oldest son had a narrowed elongated jaw structure without formal training though. I was glad we could get everything sorted from that perspective before his adult teeth started impacting anything. I still believe braces will be required to shift teeth around better now that theirs more room.
Wow, that’s a lot of money. It’s worth it if it works out well in the end, though.
And good on your for looking out and staying ahead of the curve
Now I love this elephant.

Does Lemmy have a “baby elephant gifs” section ? If not, we need that in our lives
