Not sure how to describe it.
Seems something is happening every day. Not really a drama-thing. Just a lot of energy, you know? Seems there’s an event happening every day and it’s hard to keep up.
Weird feeling, but eh, thought I’d share it with you all.
Actually, yeah, the alternative is even worse.
I’d rather that there’s stuff to do then, well, nothing or just “news” posts.
I guess the only thing I’d like is more “effort posts” sometimes, but hell, even I make posts that are basically just one-note.
Then again, that’s why I’m trying to make an Internet forum.
I agree completely on more effort posts. I think that this is one unfortunate side effect of our intense moderation policy. I think we SHOULD have an intense moderation policy, don’t get me wrong, but I also think that we would have more effort posts if we had a less-moderated space for slightly controversial discourse. I think it should be okay to be wrong sometimes and be corrected and have discourse about that in specific spaces and contexts. I don’t think it’s okay to be wrong unsolicited though, like don’t go spouting wrong ideas on random meme posts or whatever. I dunno if any of that makes sense, but I think that’s one of the reason we see less effort posts. If someone makes a big long effort post that could lead to some controversial discourse, folks shy away from that controversial discourse because they don’t want to be banned or have their posts deleted. And if folks feel like they’re scared to have controversial discourse on effort posts, then they won’t comment, which buries the effort posts and discourages folks from making them.
To be clear I don’t think folks should be allowed to run around saying intensely harmful things all the time. Or ever. I just think that’s sort of where the effort posts have gone. We used to have them all the time and they sometimes turned into giant side wide massive things where dozens of people were banned. The more intense moderation policy largely prevents that by just removing that shit before it gets out of hand, which is probably good in a lot of ways, but I think in the specific “effort posting”, has harmed that a bit. I dunno a bit rambly but, hopefully that makes sense. Maybe we can find a way to encourage more effort posts and also not get people into trouble by saying harmful shit. Surely it’s possible. Definitely not in my wheelhouse!
Honestly, I’ll say this:
There are a lot of times where people have said things that shouldn’t be said. And not just racist things (the Latino incident comes to mind, I feel), but the way people talk to others.
That’s why, in one of @Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net’s recent posts, I was against “bullying” even as a joke.
I feel that, while Hexbear is a pretty chill community, it’s best not to even joke about that stuff, otherwise, at least under the surface, you get people doing stuff that eventually grows into an “anything goes” type of attitude.
(I tag Dirt_Owl so I’m not talking behind their back or anything.)
Anyway, I come from a community that does take a hard-line when it comes to banning, and is very stringent, but that comes with its own problems.
In general, I feel, though, that it’s best to have “lines” yo don’t cross, though it doesn’t have to be an “insta-ban” every time you cross them and I think the admins are right to allow people to come back after a time, which I was told at one point by someone.
I will say this:
The problem with a lot of ML communities is that there’s not really any controversial discourse, as you talked about, beyond ML itself. We assume that we’re “controversial” by nature, but that’s only to other people. But then we don’t allow other topics because, as far as we’re concerned, we’re already being “controversial” as it is. But I think that at times we clamp down on other ideas.
It’s cool, you’re allowed to disagree with me

What did I miss 👀
You may not want to know. It offended me when I heard of it.
Did someone argue they weren’t a minority or some shit? I feel like that’s a thing I remember happening for some reason.
Yeah. I won’t name names as I don’t want to embarrass or humiliate the person that started it and just let bybones be bygones, but yeah, it happened.
