@tauonite
I’m liking it a lot! Love that we can shout over the fence to our neighbors. :)Right now it’s shouting over the fence to talk between Kbin and Lemmy, it’s a bit clunky and buggy. Hopefully that fence can over time lower and be completely removed as the code gets better and better. Looking forward to having a great time with you guys!
True, but a lot works well. I can browse subs through the front page or sub really easily on KBin. I’m not a fan of how every federated sub says owned by @ernest though.
I’m still learning the ropes. I agree a lot works well, but I’m always happy for things to become easier and more accessible. I love the idea that as people find their different niches across platforms and servers that work well for them, it’s still possible to maintain that connectivity.
Absolutely want things to improve and such. Ernest is crazy the work he does.
Honestly, I have found Kbin to be a really solid experience. I think it pulls off a lot. so when I say I’m always happy for things to improve, I really just mean I’m happy for them to grow into themselves. :)
I’m also hoping it becomes clearer soon where a post is located. Currently kbin just says the short community name (without the domain) and for self posts (“articles”), it says the link is on whatever domain you’re currently on (eg, kbin.social). That’s like how Reddit self posts did it and it’s technically correct since you’re viewing the post on the current site, but it’s misleading and confusing given that the original post is on a different instance.
I keep posting this everywhere, but the Kbin enhancement script has an option to fix that.
I’m still confused how this works. I can barely tell the difference between what comes from lemmy vs kbin. It seems like its all just mixed together in my feed. Does it only matter if I try to post or comment on something from lemmy?
Also, is there a way to subscribe or unsubscribe from other things in the fediverse? Or is it all just automatically linked at the instance level and I don’t do anything at the account level?
In general, no, it makes no difference. You can subscribe and block subs identically to local subs.
All fun and games until meta shows up and everyone goes back inside
I really wish meta would just leave the fediverse alone. I have plenty of friends who use those systems, but I am able to connect with them elsewhere.
Oh yeah, that reminds me, I gotta go walk the robot dog
I can’t wait until we live in a future where robot dogs can walk themselves.
That’s lemmygrad if they could just try one more time
I’m not sure what you mean by that. If you are saying that they claim socialism hasn’t been done right in the past, then I must disagree. Lemmygrad users don’t claim that, in fact, they value existing and past socialism and the achievements it’s made and is making.
We livin in 3023 here on the fediverse
We got flying cars
I know this image is the go-to mock up for an idealized future, but the more I look at it the sillier it gets.
Fediverse life is prospering and I already feel like my doom scrolling days are behind me :)
Mine are just re-beginning
@tauonite hello from mastodon 👋 message received!
@DamnCatOnMyDesk @tauonite it’s wonderful isn’t it? almost magical :ablobcatrainbow: :fediverse:
reminds me of Nokia’s iconic tagline: “connecting people”.How do you (easily) browse KBin from Mastodon?
@DamnCatOnMyDesk does it work the same way following a Lemmy community work, though? because when you do that, you get every single comment made in that community boosted into your timeline. not optimal.
@cloaker @tauonite @governa@noodlejetski @cloaker @tauonite @governa Like I said, currently the best we can do. Some work needs to be done to Mastodon to better handle representing threads vs timelines.
Seems the best way is to browse through KBin if you don’t want to deal with clunky search but if you want notifications and the good UI you need mastodon. I guess we just let them grow 😀
Life has been good since the federation spun back up. I love that our little community isn’t restricted to just the content we produce on our own.
We’ve got hookers and beer over here. What do you have?
I think they have access to our federated hookers and federated beers.
I feel like I’m 10 years younger.
Not gonna lie, it’s pretty awesome over here.
Not bad, not bad. Taking a break from designing a little crochet dice bag I’m gifting someone. Really shouldn’t be bragging about literally a bag, but multicolored swirly patterns require the most basic math skills and math is hard when you’ve got terminal brain damage
As a knitter, making anything with only one needle seems like rocket science.
Right? I started out knitting and I have to say it’s kinda more fun for me. It’s very zen, even though knitting patterns tend to be more complex. But it’s harder to shape things that way and to make features quite as defined, so WAY more stuffed animals, etc. are crochet and that’s what I wanted to make. I was forced to learn. I did not choose this life.
99% of either one is just muscle memory. It’s frustrating and I’m not gonna pretend like my first crochet project didn’t end in 3 do-overs and at least one frustrated crying fit. But it’s really a question of sheer stubbornness while you get the motions down
I keep making mittens, and then I just try to figure out which of my friends they might fit after I’m done. Would love to make something big like a sweater, but I just know my first try is not going to fit snugly on a single person on earth, and it’s too much of an investment to start making one when I know it’s going to be a disaster.
There are sizing options with sweater patterns, aren’t there? Granted, I own both XS and L shirts and they fit the same, so that’s infuriating.
I think you should have more faith in yourself. Cliché, obviously, but powering through having made a mess of it is the best way to grow your skillset, and unraveling it to figure out wtf you did wrong is free. As long as you subject yourself to the time sink that is having to make and measure swatches when you’re tackling stuff like shirts, I think it’ll come out fine. The worst shall be the purling.
There are sizing options, but there is also a lot of skill, experience, and care involved in making one that fits well. Especially attaching the arms in a good way is hard, and I don’t think I know anyone whose first sweater was not awkward. Lately I haven’t had a lot of time to knit either, but indeed, I should dare to experiment a bit more! :)
Ooh would love to see the bag when its done! A friend crochets and has made some really cool stuff
It’s still going to be a couple days, I think. I’m caught between a couple ideas and the indecision is really driving me nuts. But I promise I’ll keep you in mind when it’s done :D
Now that things have settled down a bit, the mobile site for kbin is pretty quick and there’s a lot of new content. I’m sure the updates will keep coming and it should be interesting to see how it develops over the next months.
I pinned the mobile site to my homepage in the iPhone, and it feels like an actual app.
The icon is on the spot that was vacated by Reddit, which has now moved to the container where FB, Instagram and Twitter went to die. Twitter is actually not even there anymore.
The best part about leaving reddit behind was that I could start over with a different username. My name over there was so negative and it didn’t truly reflect who I am today…thanks to LSD.
Hopefully over here we’ll care a bit less about reputation points as well. The system for it is currently broken in kbin, and I can’t say it’s a great loss.
Yeah I like it here. How’s Lemmy? What, to you, makes Lemmy preferable to Kbin?
Lemmy makes its image previews proportional rather than squashing them into a square, as kbin presently does, for one.
Well that’s a thing! I had noticed that but not thought much on it. i imagine Earnest has that on his todo list already, but there’s a lot on there!
Heh. Last I looked there were 49 open PRs for him to review. I dunno if he’s going to have a chance to actually code himself if he has to also be reviewing all the patches people are sending him.
I also saw something recently saying that he handed off the server admin work to someone.
EDIT: Apparently he’s not the only one reviewing.
Yeah, man’s got his work cut out!
Yes, the pictures are incredibly annoying. This is a simple change and will be one of the first ones. Now that we’ve managed to relatively control the situation, I’m taking some time off. I’ll be back at full speed starting from Monday morning :)
Thanks for all the work you put in Earnest! I’m new to kbin but I’ve been enjoying my time here and am looking forward to spending more.
Also, love the MP avi :DHey, glad you’re taking time out! Thanks for all your amazing work.
For anyone reading on mobile.
You can change that in the clog wheel tyat shows when you click on KBin on the top left. Make sure auto show the media is marked as yes, instead of the Thumbnail.
What’s funnier is that Kbin squashes them into a square and then seem to stretch that square into some strange almost 3:2 landscape format.
I tried to add some custom CSS with Tampermonkey to fix the thumbnails, and was extremely confused until I realised what was happening.
Can’t collapse comments on kbin, either.
@tauonite Hello and nice to see you! I couldn’t look here much the last few days but it seems like we are federating again which is great!
It’s awesome to be able to comment and interact across instances
The Beauty of Fediverse!
Do comments go across instances? I can see that posts can but I’m still not clear on whether comments sections for federated posts are separate or merged or what
Comments are posted across instances, although sometimes it will be delayed in sync (especially when there is a lot of traffic).
Yes, they do. Although it can take a few minutes if the instances are busy.
