Hey everyone,
I’m your local server godess. I usually sit in the background doing things, while my lovely partner @ada does her thing moderating the server, but I do pop in every now and then to let you know when important things happen like the server gets an upgrade etc.
So earlier today we were running a slightly old version of lemmy on the same hardware as the database server, which started causing problems as our instance has grown significantly over the last few days.
So tonight we’re running a freshly upgraded lemmy 0.17.4, moved onto its own dedicated server instance.
Hopefully this should resolve the issues we were having and let me or Ada know if you notice any issues or glitches.
Also Ada has relented and setup a ko-fi donations page for those that want to donate AND can afford it.
We want to stress that we are running these instances to support our community, so the last thing we want is to add financial stress to the members of that community.
If you’re privileged enough to be able to help with a donation without causing yourself financial stress, you’re welcome to help cover some of the running costs. But if you’re not, please do not feel any obligation to do so as that would undermine the goal behind creating these spaces in the first place. We’d rather keep covering the costs ourselves than pull funds away from the members of our community that need it.
Lots of love! Kaity (and Ada).
I’m getting this error on jerboa, could it be possible that you guys update the server?
We’ll be upgrading to 0.18 soon. I’m just trying to find confirmation that the latest 0.18 release candidate fixes the frozen hot/active sort issue before we invest the time required
According to https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3090#issuecomment-1591055551, it seems to have worked
Looking at the 0.18 release, it has had captcha removed, so we aren’t going to be able to upgrade just yet. We will have to wait until 18.1 when they will bring captcha back
So good news is that captcha support was merged so its definitely coming with 0.18.1; which just had its first release candidate so things are looking positive that’ll happen rather quickly.
Cheers!
I’m actually having a much worse time now because jerboa kept crashing, so I reinstalled, and now it won’t let me log in because of the server version.
To be clear, you can’t log on because of a mistake by the Jerboa devs in releasing that version, not because of our server version.
We will be upgrading to the 0.18.1 RC as soon as our other admin is feeling up to it, however she just got out of hospital with several broken bones, so it may be a few days away still
I’m also getting this error on Jerboa, For now I’m just using Lemmynade
Is that lemmur?
A forked version. Lemur was abandoned. Lemmynade was just renamed LiftOff actually. Posting this comment from it.
Jerboa still seems to work with this instance though
source: typing this comment on upgraded Jerboa
Edit: nevermind it crashes when I try to upvote a comment, of all things
0.18 is still a release candidate. Jerboa (& lemmy.ml) got too hasty updating, likely because of the federation fixes.
Just tossed in 5 bucks. Thanks for running this instance.
I’m very happy I found out about all this today, and did my part. Thanks for everything <3
Is this a place where I could ask for help navigating lemmy pages?
I found blahaj because of a post from beehaw but for some reason beehaw won’t load on firefox or chrome. When the page does load I’ll click ‘log in’ and it just hangs with the rotating circle.
I’ll be transparent and say I really am terribly confused and am uncertain of where to find places to chat about Final Fantasy 16, horror movies or other weird stuff I’m into.
196 is certainly lovely and I dig it. I also… I kinda wish for more opportunities to chat.
Not sure about beehaw not loading, but if it helps, there are two ways to see most pages in lemmy. One is where you are looking at that page as it appears from within your home instance, and the other is to look at that page on its own instance.
For example, here is a post on beehaw, loaded in blahaj:
https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/post/325114
If you click on the fedilink icon (the little rainbow graph thingy) it will take you to that same on beehaw:
https://beehaw.org/post/723237
Depending on a variety of factors, the comments you see and the upvote count will be different.
In terms of discovering communities, you can search for communities using the magnifying glass, but the search can be a little janky. There are also some communities dedicated to instance promotion and discovery, like:
- https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/c/lemmy411@lemmy.ca
There are also some externally hosted tools for browsing instances and communities, like:
If you find a community on another instance that you want to join but blahaj hasn’t already indexed it, you can do a search like this:
!manybaggers@wayfarershaven.eu
Exclamation, followed by the community name, @ sign, the instance. This should prompt blahaj to look for that community. Sometimes you have to wait a little bit and then do it again for it to work.
If you click on the fedilink icon (the little rainbow graph thingy) it will take you to that same on beehaw:
May I please ask where aboot that’d be found?
Rainbow pentagram graph thingy. On posts it’s between the comment count and the star icon for saving posts.
On comments, it will appear to the right of the link icon and to the left of the language.
Praise be server goddess and the pantheon that makes this community possible.
Donated! Would be willing to share what the current monthly costs look like?
We’re paying around $800 a month at the moment, but that is for 4 over resourced servers and storage for four separate instances. We are very much not looking to recoup all of that cost from donations, and it also doesn’t represent our final monthly costs once things have settled down with reddit migrations. For now, we’re trying to avoid things falling over if we get another wave.
Thank you for the response! I intend to continue donating as I participate in the community over time.
Big shoutout to our local server goddess @supakaity@lemmy.blahaj.zone and moderation champion @ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone! They keep blahaj.zone running smoothly and bigotry-free. We appreciate all their hard work and dedication. You both rock! 🙌👏
Thanks Kaiity and Ada for all your hard work on this!!!
thank you, local server goddess c:
Thanks you two! 💖
Not sure if this comment will post, because when I try to post on the community I mod, it just spins indefinitely and never actually posts. Currently using my Calckey account to post replies…
Okay weird. It actually posted successfully in this thread. Further research shows that the issue is, non-Lemmy users (from mastodon or calckey) can reply to a topic, but then a Lemmy user can’t reply to those replies.
I know a lot of things are up in the air right now, but do you guys have a guesstimate for server costs? I think beehaw was looking at 1-2k per year.
We’re running at around 800 a month at the moment, but that’s with 4 instances, none of which are sharing hardware anymore. That being said, we’re deliberately over resourced at the moment until lemmy and kbin settle down and we get a better feel for what they need.
Thank you both! 💜
the last thing we want is to add financial stress to the members of that community.
Imo you’re shouldering server stress so the least I, and those who can afford to donate, donate. Thanks!
Yay we can donate. Yay!
