Hey everyone,

I’m your local server godess. I usually sit in the background doing things, while my lovely partner @ada does her thing moderating the server, but I do pop in every now and then to let you know when important things happen like the server gets an upgrade etc.

So earlier today we were running a slightly old version of lemmy on the same hardware as the database server, which started causing problems as our instance has grown significantly over the last few days.

So tonight we’re running a freshly upgraded lemmy 0.17.4, moved onto its own dedicated server instance.

Hopefully this should resolve the issues we were having and let me or Ada know if you notice any issues or glitches.

Also Ada has relented and setup a ko-fi donations page for those that want to donate AND can afford it.

We want to stress that we are running these instances to support our community, so the last thing we want is to add financial stress to the members of that community.

If you’re privileged enough to be able to help with a donation without causing yourself financial stress, you’re welcome to help cover some of the running costs. But if you’re not, please do not feel any obligation to do so as that would undermine the goal behind creating these spaces in the first place. We’d rather keep covering the costs ourselves than pull funds away from the members of our community that need it.

Lots of love! Kaity (and Ada).

Is this a place where I could ask for help navigating lemmy pages?

I found blahaj because of a post from beehaw but for some reason beehaw won’t load on firefox or chrome. When the page does load I’ll click ‘log in’ and it just hangs with the rotating circle.

I’ll be transparent and say I really am terribly confused and am uncertain of where to find places to chat about Final Fantasy 16, horror movies or other weird stuff I’m into.

196 is certainly lovely and I dig it. I also… I kinda wish for more opportunities to chat.

Not sure about beehaw not loading, but if it helps, there are two ways to see most pages in lemmy. One is where you are looking at that page as it appears from within your home instance, and the other is to look at that page on its own instance.

For example, here is a post on beehaw, loaded in blahaj:

      https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/post/325114

If you click on the fedilink icon (the little rainbow graph thingy) it will take you to that same on beehaw:

      https://beehaw.org/post/723237

Depending on a variety of factors, the comments you see and the upvote count will be different.

In terms of discovering communities, you can search for communities using the magnifying glass, but the search can be a little janky. There are also some communities dedicated to instance promotion and discovery, like:

There are also some externally hosted tools for browsing instances and communities, like:

      https://browse.feddit.de/

If you find a community on another instance that you want to join but blahaj hasn’t already indexed it, you can do a search like this:

      !manybaggers@wayfarershaven.eu

Exclamation, followed by the community name, @ sign, the instance. This should prompt blahaj to look for that community. Sometimes you have to wait a little bit and then do it again for it to work.

May I please ask where aboot that’d be found?

Rainbow pentagram graph thingy. On posts it’s between the comment count and the star icon for saving posts.

On comments, it will appear to the right of the link icon and to the left of the language.

We’re paying around $800 a month at the moment, but that is for 4 over resourced servers and storage for four separate instances. We are very much not looking to recoup all of that cost from donations, and it also doesn’t represent our final monthly costs once things have settled down with reddit migrations. For now, we’re trying to avoid things falling over if we get another wave.

Not sure if this comment will post, because when I try to post on the community I mod, it just spins indefinitely and never actually posts. Currently using my Calckey account to post replies…

Okay weird. It actually posted successfully in this thread. Further research shows that the issue is, non-Lemmy users (from mastodon or calckey) can reply to a topic, but then a Lemmy user can’t reply to those replies.

We’re running at around 800 a month at the moment, but that’s with 4 instances, none of which are sharing hardware anymore. That being said, we’re deliberately over resourced at the moment until lemmy and kbin settle down and we get a better feel for what they need.

the last thing we want is to add financial stress to the members of that community.

Imo you’re shouldering server stress so the least I, and those who can afford to donate, donate. Thanks!
