With similar legislation in the EU, and other countries possibly following, perhaps the domino effect will force Apple to allow third party software globally. There were rumours Apple would respond to changes in Europe by only allowing side loading etc in Europe. But it seems like turning this on or off for every country/territory would cause a lot of fragmentation in the global app market.

It’s seemingly inevitable that Apple is going to have to open up the platform to some degree. The only question is, “how much”. I’d also hate to see global fragmentation where devices end up having different feature sets in different regions.

My first thought at the prospect of allowing side loading here, but not there, was that it was an absurd concept. Of course, as I’m based in the US, where we get ALL the features on launch day, it’s easy not to notice that Apple already voluntarily maintains a fragmented market.

      Go, JP! Go, EU!

Welp, there goes the plan to add the MyNumber card to apple wallet. When Tim Cook visited last December he basically said that you can forget about security and mynumber on iPhone if your government mandates side loading of apps.

Wdym, did Apple say they will make EU/JP phones less secure because they have to sideload apps. Or is this because sideloading apps can increase the risk of malware in some situations (Also btw I believe you can already sideload apps for 7 days normally and 1 year with an apple dev licence)

No, apple has to be the one to implement support for government IDs. They can choose not to if they wish.

Yeah that’s bullshit. Macs allowed „sideloading“ since the beginning. You don’t see them claiming the Mac is insecure, do you?
