Pretty much. At the same time, any team signing him would have a low cost, super-high upside player. Sure, the back issues, surgery recovery and nerve impingement have been grueling, but as he proved this season, when he’s actually on the court, he produces at the triple-double level at 36min/per.
Not many people remember this, but Brook Lopez went through years of foot injuries and surgeries before becoming durable as a rock in his later career. Not the same situation, but if Simmons’ back does one day recover, he could still make a big impact.

Judging by how his mental health was treated in Philadelphia, I am wondering if he is having so many problems because he had a small injury that the 76ers allowed to get worse instead of treating it when it was easy to fix.
As I understand it, the problem with herniated discs is that they can flare up at any point but also recede with time. Sometimes they require surgery and sometimes rest is the ticket. And finally, back surgeries tend to be tricky outcomes that can improve a situation, provide no real help, or even worsen a situation.
Bottom line is that Ben was just borked with this whole situation, altho clearly he became unhappy about how the Sixers handled things, which probably included Embiid publicly throwing him under the bus at a certain point.
