This is entirely subjective, I have placed some classics down lower because they just haven’t clicked with me :/ as well as a few down in shitty purely out of spite or a bad personal experience
Color codes: blue is for light-hearted/comedies, yellow to red are varying shades of disturbing/content warnings (feel free to ask or check out doesthedogdie.com for more information regarding a title)
I may have slight disagreements, but putting Midnight Mass on S tier makes me give my stamp of approval to this.
I respect that and also thanks ^^
Mike Flanagan is S Tier.
Yup, one could just put all his stuff on the S shelf. Even the stuff that’s not as good is still really good.
IMO hereditary/midsommer are both way too high, and the wailing at the bottom is a shame.
I liked Haunting of the hill house much more than Mid night mass. In my list hauntinhg of the hill house is S teir show
Oh man I started that but some stuff came up for me so I didn’t get to finish it, absolutely gotta rewatch when I get the chance that show is 👌
Yeah and after that i recommend watching haunting at bly manor.
They’re both S tier. Top notch horror.
Midnight mass is amazing imo, the scene where it cuts to him burning alive as a skeleton was just pure mastery
Great tier list. My only complaint is that I was hoping to find some that I haven’t already seen near the top. Cure (1997) was the only one I spotted. I’ll be giving that a go soon!
EDIT: I didn’t see The Void (2016) on the list, unless I missed it. I think you might enjoy it if you haven’t seen it already.
Agree with The Void. Probably the best Comsic horror movie out there. Also the Color from Space with Nic Cage is terrifying.
Why put the Final Destination series so low? IMO, only the 4th is really truly bad.
That one’s one of the few I mentioned were just purely from spite/bad personal experience, unfair I know but this is a hella subjective chart after all
Cool list! I’ll take a look at your list when deciding what to see next, as I generally agree with the titles I recognize.
I wish I had kept such a list over the years, it would be fun to look back to.
You didn’t enjoy The Wailing? I had a good time with it, but like you said your list, and all lists really, are/is subjective. Curious about your thoughts on it =)
I’m overly critical of horror movies, but The Babadook is one that I could hardly find a fault in. I’ll have to check out some of your other highly rated ones!
Annihilation and Hereditary are way too high. The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the original Dawn of the Dead, and some early Cronenberg would be in my top tear. Bone Tomahawk is rad, glad that’s on your list. The new Candyman is freaking great also.
Really? Love both Annihilation and Hereditary. What don’t you like about them?
I just don’t think they’re classics. I don’t think they’ll stand the test of time. Their stylistic approach will be passe in a few years.
But movies like Dawn of the Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre have this rawness that makes them feel more… Idk, scary.
Hereditary’s plot was a mess. It seemed like the writers just cobbled a bunch of shorter stories together. I loved the very end even though it made no sense, but the rest of it just seemed like it kept playing the gross-out card. But it did have a good, creepy vibe.
Annihilation I liked, but NP really weighs it down. They needed a bigger personality for that role. I just don’t think it will be talked about in 10 years, and we’ll still be talking about Dawn of the Dead and TCM.
BTW, Annihilation is also a book, and it has two sequels. The 2nd book is mostly a bore, but the third is amazing and actually explains how the mysterious zone was created.
I feel like Hereditary gets better on rewatches when you start to piece the story together. There’s a few small details that happen fast that if you miss things get confusing. But upon my last rewatch i came out of it having a real appreciation for the actual story of it all rather than appreciation for just the creep factor. Some GREAT creep moments in that movie though and one of the only movies to make me feel just absolutely bleak inside. Toni Collette is obviously a stand out.
Now, have you seen Beau is Afraid? What an anxiety inducing movie, altho not as stressful as Uncut Gems. But i absolutely adore Beau, such a wacky movie with tons of great ideas. Slogs a little with the intermission in the middle but otherwise already one of my favorites films ever
