My kids have watched anime for years, but I recently learned that their favorite is Scout Regiment. I’ve never followed any of this before and I’m trying to figure out the best way I can try and learn more (search results are overwhelming!) so I can randomly drop some comments that catch them by surprise.
Can anyone give a noob some pointers?

Scout Regiment? Are they referring to Attack on Titan by any chance?

Yeah, that’s Attack on Titan. It’s a really popular anime that is soon reaching its end.

The series takes place in a walled city known as Paradis Island, where the remnants of humanity reside. These massive walls were constructed to protect the people from the Titans who lurk outside. Inside the walls, life seems peaceful at first, but it’s not long before chaos ensues.
A group of people from another country (that is more technologically advanced) come over to wreak havoc because they are afraid of their powers. This leads to a pretty intense plot that goes back and forth between various view points. You learn why the people from this Paradis Island have been oppressed, but also why this new country fears them. It ends up being, in my opinion, a well crafted story where you can never be sure who’s an asshole and who’s right. I do recommend you give it a try!
Now, if you’d want to catch them by surprise, you could ask things like:
- “Do you think 3D Manoeuvre Gear would realistically work?” - could make a fun discussion topic that would be related to recent advancements in jetpacks, haha (if you and your son/daughter are interested in such topics)
- “Would you really leave the walls if you were thrown in that show?” - what the protagonists do is quite absurd (going out to fight these giants). See what he thinks about it :D
- A simple “Why do you like this show so much?” also works. Your son/daughter can then explain to you exactly what part of the show is their favourite, and perhaps that can lead to more things you can ask.
You can also attempt to catch up with them on the anime, and watch the finale together! It’s supposed to be released in the next few months if I am not mistaken. That would also be a nice experience :)

If you wish to watch it, you can do it on Crunchyroll or, if you’re into sailing the seas, on gogoanime. For the latter, you’ll have search the other seasons on the website when you’re done. There are about 4-5ish in total, but you’ll see all of them pop up if you write Attack on Titan in the search bar.

I love watching dub and sub. I like this show for both but find the dub easier to follow and understand.

Another good on both dub and sub is- i got the first season as a gift which was perfect as I always go back to rewatching this. Second season was good too

What are you looking for precisely, anime recommendations to get you into watching anime or are you looking for ways on how to watch anime?
How old are your kids? Attack on titan is great, but so gory.
It’s not a bad place to start but there are plenty of anime to watch. You might like some of the older stuff first like Trigun.I personally get all my family into anime by showing them Hayayo Miyazaki movies like my neighbor Totoro, spirited away, castle in the sky, ponyo, howls moving castle.
Check out good places to start on Google. Find an anime that went for 1 or 2 seasons. Find genres you’ll enjoy.
My wife loves mysteries so she like detective Conan… not a small anime by any means. I like fighting so I watch dragon ball z, bleach, Naruto.
The ones I’ve spoken about here are all well into high school. Not surprised they like the gore. Horror films are definitely all the rage with them and their friends. Thanks for sharing your personal insights. I have heard of Dragonball Z which made me happy!
Lol yeah. That make sense then. Hell’s paradise would be one to get into. More gory and exotic. Mission to get eternal life with a sort of battle royale. One of the better anime this season
