First post on the glorious Fediverse. I joined the moment the protest start, and I have to say, I have yet to see a single advertisement, targetted or otherwise, sans a few honest (fedditors? Don’t hang me) offering commission work. I was born just in time to see the death of IRC and the birth of targetted advertising and social media headed by corporate interest. Mark my words, Lemmy, I ain’t going back. I really hope this is the start of a shift to a renewed, decentralized internet.
PS. Who do I donate to? Is there a patreon for Lemmy or general instances?
Wait, you were using that other site without blocking ads? How and also why?
I was referring to mobile apps, which are notoriously difficult to filter ads from.
I mean, a big part of why reddit wants to get rid of third party apps is that they weren’t serving its ads.
But that was not the app’s fault. Reddit’s own API would not send ads to the apps.
Yes, but that’s kind of beside the point here. My question was why a user of Reddit would choose to use the ad riddled official app instead of an ad free third party one
(on android, idk if there is a ios version) you can block ads system wide with blokada 5 (there is also 6 in the playstore but I believe that isn’t free)
ReVanced will repack the Reddit app to remove ads. I tried doing all the patches but it wouldn’t work. That being said, I much prefer Lemmy.

Seriously though, if you want to donate, here’s their dono page. Just know that the main dev is known for some…spicy opinions.
(Also FMHY doesn’t have any donation page and most likely never will.)
I joined the FMHY instance because of the description when I was looking for where to join. So, probably a stupid question, but; why wouldn’t they have a donate page to keep the instance going?
Removed by mod
I can only speculate here, but the idea of accepting money for any piracy related endeavor (good faith or not) makes my skin crawl as an old school pirate. Maybe the owner is the same way.
Asking for money would completely remove the F in FMHY.
So I took a look at the opinions post you linked and see the top comment by ‘wheelcultist’ was removed, as well as the rest of their comments in that thread. Seeing the user’s profile, they are marked as banned. But then searching the mod log I can’t find any information on that user or how they came to be banned. I appreciate the transparency of mod logs for all users but this has me a bit confused.
Yeah, I’m not sure why that’s not appearing on the mod logs. It was just a temp ban for 1 day for harassment. I didn’t know I removed the rest of their comments though. I’ll look into it.
EDIT: Okay so apparently I accidentally ‘purged’ the user instead of just temp banning. Purging means deleting from the database and not including it in mod logs (I have no idea why they aren’t in there, but they aren’t.) This user has since been unbanned. @wheelcultist@lemmy.fmhy.ml I am so sorry for accidentally wiping you off the face of the planet.
Ahh, I see. Thanks for the followup. With the vast array of instances and communities with different rules and experiences they want to offer their users, it’s nice having open and transparent moderation. But yeah that definitely seems like an issue that should be addressed on two counts. Having no log for purging an account, the most nuclear option, seems like a clear contradiction to transparent policies. And being able to accidentally do that without realizing, versus a temp ban or something, is definitely not ideal.
From what I understand, right now moderation tools for the platform are quite limited so I appreciate the additional effort that you and other moderators are putting in to maintaining these communities!
We’re Lemmings, obviously.
Same here - loving it so far! I was an advanced computer user in the late 90s and early 00s. Front line for early internet, did some light programming, etc. although I never went into tech as a career. All of that changed with smart phones since they’re so much more locked down than a computer. I accepted that ads, data farming, and junk content were going to be a part of my life since everything moved towards corporate control. This year has been so great! Everything I use on PC officially has Linux support and I was able to ditch windows; now I’m moving away from websites with ads/trackers. Really feels like things are shifting back to how they should’ve been.
I will say it’s probably too soon to donate to instances. You might want to wait a few weeks until groups gain credibility.
Welcome back, it’s nice to have you join the fight in the war against general computation!

For smart phones, you don’t have to put up with ads and data farming. Research what phones support lineageOS, GrapheneOS or … dang I forget the rest but there are many. Install one of those, then ‘MindtheGApps’ (if you must have google play store access etc.), AdAway, F-Droid store, Magisk with its root and other plugins.
I am very happy with my recently-acquired ‘new-used’ OnePlus 5T running lineageOS 20. Apps can’t show me any ads; and I have near total control over my phone.
I haven’t heard of any of these, so now I’ve got plenty to research 😄 thanks!
Glad to help. Back up your data before you do anything though :)
You dontate to your instance provider. In my case, beehaw or lemmy.ca. there is no communial donation since I could technically host and only approve myself but be a part of the fedi to access everything.
So find who your instance is with, goto their site and find the dono link
I hope it is too. I heard there was a donation link somewhere, but the Lemmy dev team apparently have some questionable political views. Do with that what you will.
