In this instance, should we ban NSFL, hardcore gore content? I think it’s not a problem since anyone can subscribe to the community they want but if the vast majority don’t want it, we can ban it. Decisions must be made from the beginning.

Here’s a StrawPoll link.

Edit: Looks like we are going to ban it. Commenters are right that we cannot currently list NSFW and NSFL content separately on the homepage. Since anyone can open an instance, we should let other people to open an instance on lemmynsfl.com. Also moderating these communities can be hard too. So it’s okay.

I suppose you need to decide what is NSFW. Is it only the Lewd images people are posting? That’s pretty tame. Are you going to accept nude/porn/hardcore porn/fetish/furry? Violence? Drugs? Nsfl can be nsfw.

So what is the purpose of this community?

But dont posts from all communities in an instance show if you’re browsing on local.

That could be hella jarring for someone who doesn’t want to see gore. Imo there really should be a feature that differentiates nsfl and nsfw in lemmy.

Oh now i understand. Thanks for the explanation. In this case yes, I think both should be allowed, so people can make separate communities for each. Both porn and gore are considered NSFW so they both fall under the banner of our instance :D

agree. NSFW is such a broad thing to be a community. Atm we need to build specified communities for different topics. Like there could be a porn community and a gore community separately. and then go from there to more specific things like an amateur porn community, or to hentai, or fight videos etc.

For now tho definitely need to just pick one or the other. I cant imagine a porn/gore community being super successful cos those are two WILDLY different moods for most ppl

I think it should be banned since, as of now, there is no way to hide gore by default.

Let’s say I’m browsing the instance and choose to explore some new communities, so I turn on the local filter. I (and I think all the people who are not into gore, which I suppose is the majority) do NOT want, even by mistake, to see gore in my feed, especially if I’m looking for “normal” porn.

Yeah, I could block the communities, but this would mean finding them, interacting with them, and then blocking them, which is not something I want to do.

This is also a good point. While i like the idea of having the title of this instance make sense (meaning having anything NSFW including gore) I also reckon you have a point in that we have no way of blocking gore by default. But maybe thats where more instances come in? like an instance called LemmyPorn or whatnot? I’m not sure… its like the wild west out here!

This could be solved by introducing tags/flairs for communities (set by the instance’s admin and mandatory for communities) which the users can use to filter the kind of communities they want/do not want to see. Does anyone know if lemmy devs are already planning to do this?

those guys are barely holding servers together atm, it will get worse over the next two days (and maybe longer) before it gets better, but i’m sure theyll get to it eventually. So for now I think we have to make do and just say that this instance is non-gore only, since we cant filter it out.

I have nothing against drawn gore, though it’s not something I’m into myself, but I think others are right that the content filtering we have now isn’t enough to allow users to avoid it if we do permit it.

If we can make our own patches to lemmy we could supply a nsfl tag which could be distinctly different to the nsfw tag in that it:

      1. Doesn’t show to people who have nsfl disabled
      2. Doesn’t federalize this content or share it outside of lemmynsfw, but then that would defeat the purpose of lemmy idk

I always felt like reddit should have added a separate nsfl toggle as it’s in a whole other ballpark, maybe lemmy could implement it?

I don’t know anyone who likes gore content except future serial killers. So what audience is being targeted by allowing it, and is that the audience you want? Glad you choose to ban it.

I don’t understand the argument that people could accidentally see NSFL content while browsing for other communities. From what I can see, all NSFW image posts are blurred with no option to display them by default on both web/desktop and Jerboa. So the argument is that people might see extremely blurred NSFL images?

Really all this means IMO is that the second another Lemmy server with less restrictions on content appears, it will become more mainstream than this one.

Right now I’m working on disabling blur and even showing content without logging in. So your argument is going to be invalid.

Also, there’s already a pretty simple way to disable the blur using the stylus plugin (there was another post about it in another com earlier today), so the blur is already not enough. Just reinforcing your point.

FWIW, I think you’re making the right call to ban it from lemmynsfw and letting someone else open up lemmynsfl if they want.
