Everything is a post-election ploy and definitely not motivated by plain old economics. China is the largest economy in Asia and has the largest tourism base in Asia (and possibly the world?).
The DPP seems to have forgotten that realpolitik exists.
I am rather surprised that Nauru would break ties, since it’s commonly known as being part of the Western sphere of influence.
Nauru is a state completely dependent on foreign aid. I imagine their loyalties are pretty predictably motivated.
Maybe China is giving them aid without requiring them to hold deported migrants.
One of their main allies!
