    As a South Indian myself, I would disagree with your statement. From the top of my head, I can easily recall the practice of Ajalu and breast-tax.

    This necessarily does not mean that widows had it better in the South - they had to get rid of their jewelry, if any, and that they wear simple, white clothes. Optionally the widows had to shave their hair. They could not re-marry as widows were thought to bring bad luck. Obviously, with all of it comes the downfall of one’s status in society.
