Has anime become a catchall term for animated stuff?
Animated movies, series etc. are like most other art media and just need people with the resources and will to get the job done. Both movies and cartoons were created in USSR and it is possible that a mature animated creation scene could be birthed at some point in the future.
Anime and manga on the other hand are more than just the medium. They are specific products of Japan and are cultural exports with stratified characteristics. No one will say Avatar the Last Airbender is an anime for example.
Capitalist has etched its distinctive marks on the anime and manga industry. Without capitalism anime would not exist as it does today but in all likelihood will be a lot better because god knows it cannot get much worse.
