I’m not a Linux beginner but I like gnome because it’s polished and the opinionated defaults work ok for me. I don’t really want to spend much time thinking about my DE. I understand why people like KDE or tiling WMs, I just don’t want to dedicate much time tweaking settings. Although I’m mainly a laptop user and just use the WM to open a web browser, so simple gesture navigation and workspaces is enough.

Sápmi (region of northern Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Russia), which is the land of the Sámi peoples, was essentially force assimilated over centuries by Germanic populations encroaching from the south. I think this counts as colonization depending on your definition, especially considering that those respective countries today control most of what is historically Sámi territory. The Sámi activists I follow are all supporters of a free Palestine.

The Soviets liberated Finland even earlier than WW2 in 1918. Unfortunately, the result of the Finnish Civil War ended with the annihilation of the Finnish Reds and the victory of the Whites. And IMO this fact fed directly into the main causes of the 1939 Winter War, since the White-led government was unwilling to negotiate or compromise with the Soviets. I don’t want to say that the outcome of the Finnish Civil War would change everything, but I do sometimes wonder how WW2 could have gone differently if the Finns became Reds.
It’s quite a shame considering that Lenin and the Bolsheviks are an important part of Finnish independence.
That’s sweet, I didn’t think about using nixos-anywhere for this purpose (just simplifying the install process on a new machine). I used it to great success to install NixOS on a VPS that only had a few OS options like Debian.
Yeah this is a good use case for it, if I remember right you can also trivially generate a live installer iso from the same nix configuration you’d use to run any usual updates. So you can make a custom installer for your exact configuration and copy that onto a flash drive to bootstrap you into a working environment. I think the live installer would generate something like a hardware-configuration.nix too.
