  • Yeah I was looking at much more expensive controllers and bemoaning the cost, considering if it was worth just building my own until I saw that the Exquis is not terrible cost-wise (it’s certainly an investment, but doable long-term) and it’s got 3-dimensional aftertouch? For €300? Like that’s a feature I think is only otherwise available on the Lumatone which is in excess of 2 grand, and way out of even my long-term price range. And I might not have ever known about it if it weren’t for this module showing up on VCV Library. I see it and go “Exquis controller… that looks like a thing I should know more about…”

And so now it’s on the Gear Acquisition Syndrome list… sighs at least I know what I want.

  • Also in VCV Rack, Frozen Wasteland has a tiny helper module for VST Hosting called Midichlorian, which converts Microtonal V/Oct CV into standard 12-TET V/OCT and Pitch Bend CV

Finally, the microtonal modules from Pitch Grid are great, the Microtonal Hammond module which takes the tone wheel “additive synthesis” concept the Hammond Organ works by and expands it into the microtonal world. The Exquis controller interface I haven’t tried because I don’t have an Exquis controller (yet…) but I assume it does a good job based on the other modules in the plug-in, and lastly the microtonal V/Oct mapper is great for reliably mapping specific keys on a standard keyboard in 12-TET and mapping each to specific EDOstep values in whatever tuning system you are working in.

From my recollection, these PitchGrid modules have fewer tuning options than the Grande modules, but were useful for my needs as I’m composing in 31-EDO.

Hope these are helpful for those using VCV Rack!

  • +1 on VCV Rack, I use it more than anything else, and my whole first album was made exclusively using free modules there. I do get some of the premium modules there, mostly to support developers who put their time and effort into making the vast majority of the modules free.

I’m currently trying to get into Bespoke Synth, the DAW that describes itself as “If you took a hammer to Ableton and told someone to put it all back together on their own for each project”. It’s got similar UI to things like Max with elements you wire up like a modular synthesizer, but with live-coding in python and VST hosting and such. And it’s free.

I also really want to get into playing around with Vital Synth, I’ve heard it’s really powerful and also free, and can run as a VST.

Finally, I use Minifreak V a lot, as I have the hardware Minifreak and it works well with syncing the hardware with the software, and it also just got the 3.0 firmware update today with sample engine and seven granular algs. Really, really powerful soft synth, but also money.

  • Yo, thanks so much for making this comm a thing, I’m really happy that it’s already taken off! If you didn’t see my post in c/commrequest, I wanted this to be a thing because I made a Trans Synths starter pack and feed on Bluesky and wanted to have that community be multi-platform for those who no longer feel safe on Bluesky with their recent bs. So there may be some folks that come over here from Bluesky now that they know this is a thing.

If you haven’t seen the video by Red Means Recording from last year “Your Synthesizer is Trans (and Other Stories)” I highly recommend. Was the inspiration for making this community a thing.
