1 year agoI think that this line of thinking is smuggling a few assumptions. Ask yourself this: where is ChatGPT? Is it located in your computer, in the cloud? If we cannot even specify a spatio-temporal location for the chatbot, then we cannot begin to assign a notion of consciousness to a “thing” which isn’t even a “thing”. The real problem of consciousness is dividing the world into self vs non-self. What counts as the chatbot and what counts as the “external” world?
The only way I foresee humans surviving the advent of AGI is if we become one with the AGI. AI is just the ultimate conclusion of the evolution of the universe from inanimate matter to fully animate matter.The only explanation for there still to be a debate over whether or not AI will take over even after seeing GPT4 is the fact that debate only happens on the edge of the knowledge graph where the uninformed suddenly interact with newly informed, not in the interior where the outcome is settled.
