  • i live in a majority sfh zoned streetcar suburb, however the area is majority walkable and not too awful for biking as a confident adult because of the grid roads for the walkable portion.

however, we are surrounded on all sides outside of this pocket of grid streets by poorly zoned sfh dominated by no sidewalk cul de sacs and 4 lane stroads with painted door zone bike lanes. the most notable areas are anywhere particularly north (rich people so literally no sidewalk) and near freeway interchanges. our south freeway interchange is the worst of them because its very stroady and has an auto dealership next to it. the others dont even try to pretend theyre not highway interchanges.

  • Yeah, that’s a sticky situation. Low costs driven by lower cost of land acquisition. I will say if you didn’t have the car you could probably afford the more expensive markets, but obviously going car free isn’t for most people…

That said, its a lot easier to do grocery shopping walking or biking when you just do it for the next few days max. Though if the closest store is a 30 min walk its pretty inconvenient.

  • Really depends on what you want and or need. Good general things to look for are riding position (biggest indicator is drop bars vs flats vs cruiser bars), mounting points for racks and fenders, and reliability. Try to avoid buying from department stores as the bikes are often mass produced and of very low quality.

I would go to a bike shop and ask to test ride some cheap hybrids or cruisers.
