This. Also, whatever is going on in China and Russia is NOT “communism.” Those are oligarchies, where a small number of billionaires use the news media to keep the lower and middle classes fighting with each other, while the rich keep running off with all the f*cking money.

TikTok is owned by ByteDance, which is a front for the Chinese Communist Party. It’s being used by the CCP to spread agit-prop and self-destructive crap.

Other countries use their “social media platforms” the same way, but that’s no reason to make it easy for other governments to destabilize your society.

There’s currently about 600 lemmy instances, in many different countries, and those countries each have different laws regarding the protection of speech. Some of it is also just power-tripping mods or left-wing / right-wing censorship.

If this is happening to a community you like, you can always switch to the same community in a different instance. Eventually, the “official” community will have the most subscribers and the community with the censorship problems will wither and die.

  • Just because the Nazis called themselves the “national socialist party” did NOT make them communists. They called themselves that to attract naive revolutionary idiots who thought the government would help them. But they were always fascists.

North Korea calls itself “The People’s Democratic Republic of North Korea” even though is not the People’s, not Democratic, and definitely not a Republic. It’s a marketing gimmick by the government to pretend that it’s something it isn’t.
