Membership of the BRICS group of emerging-market nations is set to double, with Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia and Egypt to join its ranks on Jan. 1, South Africa’s envoy to the bloc said.
That was mostly a self-mocking joke, as I pay taxes to one of the BRICS (Brazil); don’t take it too seriously. (And likely biased given that the Brazilian GDP grew almost nothing in comparison with the others.)
From some sloppy websearch it seems that Egypt and Ethiopia’s GDPs grew around 4% in 2023. Given that it’s barely 2024 might as well use 2022 data.

Well, since the old acronym lost its meaning, might as well rename it to Bricks. “Our economies sink together! Like bricks!”
I think that the decision to join the bloc will be mostly positive, for both old and new members.
