So long story short, my gf bought me a steamdeck for chirstmas, but she accidentally put the wrong address and it got delivered to the neighbor across the street. When I got the package back from them, the box was already opened, the deck powered on and signed into a steam account, and the plastic twisty for the power cable was already removed and lazily put back on. Amazing neighbors, I know, but besides that I need to know if I actually got everything back from them or if I’m missing anything.
All I have is the deck itself in the carrying case with the charger. Zero packing whatsoever. Plus I have no idea what model it is, so I don’t know if she splurged for the higher tier model that came with the steam profile exclusives or not(not that it matters at this point).
Its crappy that this christmas surprise was ruined, but if I know I’m not missing anything important, then I’m just going to factory reset the device and just act like I didn’t know I got a new deck until then. If there is things missing then I don’t really know where to start but I’m sure I’ll figure something out.
Thanks everyone!
Can you check the serial number of what was dispatched compares to what you have just to ensure its the correct one?
Fk those neighbors
U should just go open there mail. Next Amazon box whatever that shows up and return it used no matter what the item is lol
Sounds like they stole your digital bonuses.
How did you get it back though? Did they return it or did you have to find it first?
- Be thankful that the neighbors gave it up.
- Teach your GF your correct address.
- Move on.
We all wanna know…what excuses did the neighbors give that they opened the package? Instead of realizing it wasn’t for them and contacting delivery, what did they come up with to explain that they turned it on and began using it like they made the purchase?
My blood would be boiling – this is such a violation on their end and I wish you could hold them accountable in some way. There is a certain joy in opening brand new things and they got their grubby hands on your Deck before you did – thankfully they didn’t scratch or damage it.
There is zero context in the post but why does everyone assume the worst?
It’s just after black friday, and its also near christmas. It’s the busiest time of year in terms of getting packages delivered. We have daily deliveries. Some stuff we order. Other is from family / friends. The number of times my wife hands me a box while i’m on a zoom meeting and i crack it open without even checking the labels.
And for all you people saying its illegal. No it is not.
It is illegal to intentionally open someone elses mail but if you make a mistake and then take steps to return the mail to the rightful owner then its actually not illegal. You can’t apply the law if you didn’t realise the mail was not yours when you opened it. So put your keyboards down and go take a few deep breaths. Also a new deck has launched and the old ones are reduced in price. It’s a hugely popular device. I opened mine when it arrived this week (way earlier than expected) and reading this thread i still couldn’t tell you if my name was on the package.
How about the OP just gives more information or god forbid they actually have a conversation with the neighbor to find out what happened.
It sounds like the neighbors dropped it over as soon as they realised the error meaning nothing illegal has happened.
The steam account being logged in strongly suggests it was a kid who probably opened it either thinking it was for them or… just being a kid. If it was an adult being shady of course they would have logged out.
Chances are the kid opened it for whatever reason and started to play with it. Mum or dad saw and instantly told them off and took it from them and took it straight over to the neighbor.
The OP really should just go chat with the neighbor. Ask what happened and ask if they still have the packaging as its a gift. That would be a great starting point.
And everyone else needs to chill out.
How the F do you accidentally send to another address?
Was it sent UPS? I assume that even if the address was wrong your name was on it? That is a felony.
Enjoy the free steam account?
So I will say I’m very happy you are happy with your new deck. I know the situation was very immediately frustrating to piece together everything but if something like this ever happens again, just watch an unboxing video and you will get a very methodical play by play on everything the product comes with.
As for the model? If it’s an oled, literally all you have to do is go near a light source and see if you can see a full reflection of the light in the screen or if the screen is still fully visible without reflection. If the former, it’s the 512gb oled. If not reflective, it’s the fancy 1tb model. If it’s not an oled, same thing applies to the 1tb oled but it’ll have 512gb storage instead of 1tb. All the others vary only in storage and can be found in the storage settings on the deck.
Enjoy your early Christmas my dude and also enjoy any and all time with your amazing GF. You may be able to customize that deck inside and out, but a GF like that is perfect just the way they are cause they wanna see you happy.
a huge cyber security risk tbh
Are you friendly with the neighbor? Like did they see your name and go “oh I’m gona take this”.
Or did a random person get a random $400+ device and get really excited, then give it to the rightful owner when requested?
I guess it depends where you live? If you live in an apartment building maybe you ask around to see if the name is of anyone in the building?
But you said across the street. Idk it doesn’t really feel like the neighbor did anything wrong here from first glance.
