I’ve seen a ton of people posting about “the gpu bug” and last night when I was playing Shredders I noticed the odd stutter. Nothing game breaking but I remember thinking “hmm, I thought this game would run more than the fps I’m getting”. Turns out it doesn’t, but still.
So I get up the performance overlay and I see my gpu constantly jumping between 200-1040mhz and remember it being mentioned by many on here.
Like I said, I’ve not encountered any occasions of games being unplayable (yet) but can someone please explain in simple terms what is actually happening with this bug?
TIA
ELI5 version:
Saying your deck is running at 200MHz/1040MHz clocks is like saying your vehicle has 4 wheels. If you try to look at a busy street you’ll most likely see a vehicle with 4 wheels. Sometimes there will be a 2 wheel vehicle, and sometimes there will even be a 3 wheel one or an 18 wheel one. But most of the time you’ll see 4 wheels.
Person A had a car problem, their car was making weird noises when accelerating. They posted online, “My car is making weird noises when accelerating, I noticed that my car has 4 wheels”.
Person B also had a car problem, their car headlights were not working. They posted online, “My car’s headlights are not working, my car also has 4 wheels”.
Person C’s car AC is not working. They post online “My car has the 4 wheel problem too”
Person D’s car has no problem. They post online “I also noticed that my car has 4 wheels”.
The “4 wheels problems” became popular enough that any new person that ran into a issue self diagnosed as having the “4 wheels” problem too. And people with no issues started noticing that their car also had 4 wheels and started worrying they might have a defective car.
In reality the “4 wheels problem” is just a lot of different problems, all unfortunately categorized under the same label. So if you aren’t running into any issues don’t worry, it is okay to have a car with 4 wheels. And if you do run into problems, and there have been real issues with 3.5.X, providing an explanation longer than “I have the 4 wheels” problem will be useful in getting the issue resolved.
P.S. This is a big oversimplification of the situation and the analogy isn’t perfect. But I think it conveys the idea of what is going on properly.
