I’ve been using SteamOS Btrfs on my deck since I got the device, but now it broke with the latest StemaOS 3.5 update. I’m a bit annoyed with how little control I have over the system on SteamOS (the files outside of my home get lost/reset after each update and I can’t even choose the filesystem) and would like to remove SteamOS and only install Arch Linux (or another distribution) on its SSD.

I asked about it a year ago and was told that a few things were missing, for instance outside of SteamOS it wasn’t possible to update the firmware and some pieces of hardware weren’t supported as perfectly.

Has the situation improved today?

Has anyone removed SteamOS from their deck and is using a regular Linux distribution instead? What’s your experience? What do you miss or what’s sub-par?

I tried Arch back in March or April, and I couldn’t get the audio to work. I think that’s not a problem with recent kernels. Everything else was fine.

Some of this guide is out of date, but it’s a good place to start.
