I had no idea that was a Tool breakup song. There’s something that so often bothers me about metal lyrics where they’re only compelling for me if I have no idea what they’re saying or why. The rhythms and the rhymes are neat but actually listening to what they’re saying takes away from all that. I feel the same way with a lot of music in general, but in metal there’s a weird intellectual pretense that Tool is the epitome of. I don’t want you to be dark and brooding and I don’t want to message to be obscured. I want poignance and it’s so difficult to find.
