I have a small box with several virtual machines and use 3 pcs. 5TB 2.5" HDDs in RAID5 config for backups, file syncing, security cameras etc. I chose 2.5" due to low noise, low power consumption and small size, as I don’t have a dedicated room for this, it’s basically in my living room.

The problem I have is that these Seagate ST5000LM000 drives are dying in only 6-12 months, I’m so tired of maintaining this, and dealing with warranty. It’s a small raid5 system out of 3 drives, and I have already went through 10 of them. This can’t be bad luck, the drives must be just bad/unsuitable.

What are my options for HDDs, if I want to stick with 2.5"?

I’m guessing 2.5" SATA HDDs for laptops?

    Most reliable has been Hitachi.

I do use 2.5" SAS drives in production and you guessed it, Hitachi is the most reliable.
