It would be funny if the usual r/Catholicism chuds who will complain about this finally got the courage to set this guy up as their antipope in St. Louis. That way they can finally fulfill their dreams of living in a CK2 savefile.

I don’t want to convert to Catholicism but if they ever get to a point where I can call people heretics for being transphobic I might be tempted.

Ofc this is a long way from that but it’s a big step from the Pope’s previous position of comparing trans people to nuclear weapons.

naw you need to convert to pro-lgbt orthodox christianity

there is this one orthdox priest who has a bunch of videos about why protestants are dumb and creationism is stupid and is militantly pro-trans. to the point that there are a bunch of right-wing christians on youtube complaining that when they were transphobic he DM’ed him and told them to kill themselves which is absolute 100% king energy.

he’s genuinely very insightful and has made me consider conversion from time to time.

here is a banger from our king

Most of the time with Francis, I feel like the media wildly overstates his actual position. I’m not sure how much of it is the media wanting it to be true, how much they don’t understand doctrine, or whether Francis is using weasel words (he is incredibly skilled at it). In the past, I’ve been able to get into the actual text of what he said and see how what he’s talking about isn’t actually that radical of a departure from standard Catholic doctrine.

But tbh, maybe I’ve gotten lazy but it feels like recently, he actually has been kinda going rogue on some of this stuff. Or even if he isn’t actually changing doctrine, it does kinda feel like he’s trying to push the church in a certain direction without explicitly doing it.

Just try to watch what he says about being open or accepting to a person versus saying “this is not a sin” or “this person is a Christian”. A simpler, 2D Protestant example would be like when some churches will “we welcome everyone” and maybe even have a rainbow somewhere. What they are usually saying they welcome you inside the literal building but they are not actually going to accept you as LGBTQ.

I feel like the media wildly overstates his actual position.

They downright distort what he says to make him seem like a progressive pope. They have been painting him as a “lgbt+ friendly pope” for years while he says shit like this:

“Gender ideology, today, is one of the most dangerous ideological colonizations […] Today children — children — are taught in school that everyone can choose his or her sex. Why are they teaching this? Because the books are provided by the people and institutions that give you money. These forms of ideological colonization are also supported by influential countries. And this is terrible!”

His most “progressive” stance on the matter is that lgbt people should not be literally kicked out of the church or verbally attacked. That’s it. He still thinks it’s a sin, it’s still forbidden to partake in sacraments and gay marriage is still a big no-no, despite the way they phrased things in the article. I think what makes them do this is not PR, but clickbait. The idea of a pro-lgbt pope just generates a lot of engagement from people who are bewildered over how such a historically reactionary institution could have a progressive pope (it does not).

Yet despite you and I being in agreement, TradCaths think he is the anti christ. I think he is an excellent PR bullshitter and the media is trying so hard to do something with Catholicism, they often report his general comments in the press as new Catholic rules, when in reality a lot of things take a bunch of time to codify; but I will say, having tradcaths on suicide alert, and constantly outing themselves is genuinely funny to me.
