I’m currently using a mini desktop pc Acer Aspire XC - Desktop Intel Core i3-10105 3.70GHz 8GB RAM 256GB SSD W10H with 2 hdd drives over usb as a 15 TB media server with multiple(10-15) podman containers. Looking to setup a dedicated NAS machine with home media duties along with nextcloud for managing and backing up of personal photos and videos. Intend to setup a NAS OS with some uptime guarantee with UNRAID/TrueNAS/snapraid for the media server and automate backup of personal data.
I have 2 paths I could take:
-
Reuse the PC above for parts and purchase LGA1200 motherboard for 70-80 bucks and some cheap used ram in addition to the 8GB from the above PC.
-
Lookout for a combo deal on 12th/13th gen processor (probably for 250-300) with lga1700 socket and sell of the mini PC that I currently have (hope I can sell it).
Between both these paths I think the case, psu and any cache drives, ssd etc are a common expense. Need suggestions on the best path forward for my needs.
Thanks.
I mean, a 10th gen i3 sounds great for a NAS to me, and last I knew TrueNAS doesn’t support BIG.little architectures like many 12th and all 13th gen Intel CPUs anyway if you do go down that road. So I’d probably do the former unless if you can sell that box for enough to match the price difference
