So, after this whole debacle with NetGate pulling yet another dick move and pulling the rug out from under those of us who did get the home+lab licence for PFSense+, we are now looking for alternatives. While most of us are probably going to go to Opnsense, I was thinking of another option.
I was looking around and saw that even some of the more modern ASAs, the 5525-x can be got for pretty cheap and what with Cisco’s licence being perpetual and pretty much for life, could an ASA work in a homelab?
Configuring it isn’t a problem for me, we use them at work and I have CCNA
I know it’s possible and can be done via ether SSH or ASDM (granted I’ll have to move both DHCP and DNS to another box as ASAs don’t do DNS and the DHCP server on ASAs don’t offer a lot of features) - but is this overkill for a homelab?
If anyone does happen to be running an ASA or has some tips, I’d love to hear them
You maybe better off using your PFSense knowledge and migrate over to OPNSense.
Did this over a year ago, haven’t looked back.
