Hello guys, i was thinking to build up my own server and to put it in my parents place, my idea is about having a server that i can turn on whenever i want for using it for the following purposes:

  • Nas, both me and my gf sometimes need a system for storing and sharing files
  • Gaming purpose, it will be used sometimes as gaming machine for my gf (and rarely from me ), she does like playing the switch games through emulation and she would like to play them wherever she wants, in the lving room with the big screen, or in her macbook
  • Cad, Cfd, cam, for me when i cannot use my personal computer
  • Adobe package, for my gf when she cannot acces to her personal computer
  • It will may host in the future a small website for a project we are planning but is not sure

I was thinking to buy an hp (Server HP ProLiant DL380P) server i found in my country for 300 euro that has:

  • 2 x xeon e5 2670 V2
  • 64 gb of ram
  • 2 power supply of 750 wat in redundant setup
  • 2 hdd of 600 gb each
  • I was thinking to add myself a nvidia m40 for around 150 euro I’m writing this post because first of all i want your opinion about my plan i would like to know what should i do to create my server from your perspective (or how you would peronally do it) these are some of doubts i have:
  • What Os do you advice me to use for my system? I everytime used only windows because is the only one fully compatible with my software then I don’t have experiences with linux, but if u advice me to go for linux i will really consider your words
  • What is the best software to use for creating my Nas?
  • Should i create different virtual machine for each purpose? Maybe with something similar to hypevision?
  • How will i connect my television or pad to my tv in my house remotely? Any advice is welcome, i want to thank all the community for helping.

Ps: I don’t plan to use the server to work while my gf will be playing, we will probably keep only the nas turned on and on the while one of us will use it time by time for playing or working

As a general rule, I wouldn’t game on the same system that runs a NAS. You won’t want to be taking your NAS offline in order to mess with the drivers / pass through settings on gaming VMs. Also, gaming on a remote machine isn’t great, even with fiber connections at both locations.

Buy a gaming/CAD PC for you and your gf and make a NAS out of a raspberry pi with a USB drive while you learn the ropes.

Gaming on a remote system works just fine if you do it properly with something like a thunderbolt connection to a dumb terminal. You can also do it over packet switched networking like the internet, but you need WAY faster than 1gbps for it to be smooth and virtually no one has the 40gbps of even thunderbolt3.
