Looking for opinions on a Ubiquity US-8. Anything to look out for or majorly glaring cons? The desktop form factor & price ($60) are extremely appealing.

But after actually paying for a HP DL360p Gen8 recently, I figured I better do some research this time. 🤣

This would be my very first managed switch, to be paired a with Linksys ea8300 (currently researching installing OpenWRT), a HP DL360p, possibly a Netgear smart switch, and various Ethernet/wireless clients (win7-11, Android, smart TV, etc). I want to make use of more than 1 Ethernet port on the server, probably run vlans for whatever, but also just learn about this stuff.

(Mech eng by trade & while I was “expert-ish” with single desktops/workstations/engineering software, that was the time of Win7 before my health tanked & my IT knowledge has never gone beyond being tech support for some family & friends.

But I’ve always wanted to learn about & utilize enterprise-ish networking & features, so here I am!)

    They work ok

The main thing is that they require an installation of the Unifi Controller or a cloud key to set them up. They are not a standalone device.

Also, the Unifi way of setting up vlans is a bit weird. They do not use the standard nomenclature and use groups. If you want something to learn, I would suggest some other device.

Dang. Guess I’ll keep looking. Thanks!

I was prepared to live with the requirement of the controller for setup/updating, but I’d rather not have to learn standard/non standard. At least not starting out, anyway.
