I remember reading about this guy and getting so creeped out I made sure my windows were locked despite living on the top floor. I remember when he got caught. This is when people started getting into Doe cases for real. How he got caught was by comparing crime scene DNA to a close relative.

Michelle McNamara, author of “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark” (published posthumously) pushed the forensic genealogy ideas that helped track down this monster. There was also a great HBO documentary in the same name.

Yes, but he had a ton of help from Paul Haynes and Bill Jensen, without them, it may not have been finished.

12 consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole plus 8 years

They really wanted to make sure he never got out of prison. The 13 murders, 51 rapes, and 120 burglaries listed on the Wikipedia page are just the crimes we know about. The fact that he was a police officer means that he was in positions to take advantage of people dozens of times per day. What a complete piece of shit. It’s a good thing they caught him, but a tragedy that it took so long.

Sorry about the odd description. I was very into this case as it unfolded and I didn’t formulate it all as well as I wanted.
