I have a strange problem. I’ve been using Chessbase for 20 years and currently use Chessbase 16. On my main computer, I have 32 threads. I can open Chess Base and set Stockfish to 32 threads without lag. I tried doing this today with nothing else open and was getting lag. I tried a different chess engine with 32 threads, and still had lag. I opened up Fritz 17 and used both engines with 32 threads without issue.

I then tried my laptop, which has 16 threads. I had the same issue with Chess Base 16. I did not have any problems with Fritz 17. I can’t imagine it’s any change I made because I haven’t made any changes. I also need to find out how it could affect two different systems. I would be grateful since it’s easier for me to use Chess Base.

I’m stumped. I tried to roll back the drivers, but it did not fix the issue. I used Win 11 and Win 10; my main desktop and laptop had AMD chips. I even bought it on my old desktop with CB 16 and Fritz 17. It is using Win 7 and an old I7 3770K. On the entire eight threads, it lags on CB 16 but not on fritz 17.

I have tried the new CB 17 and still get the lag issue. Immortal was always the best, for finding help. Thanks in advance for it!

I don’t think, that it is a chessbase 16 or 17 problem. I’m not entirely sure if it’s for example after an update a Windows issue, or an AMD driver issue, but sure it needs to be fixed. Can you reset to the last properly functioning state from a backup at least on one of your pc’s?

What happens if you use Stockfish with less than 32 threads ?

No issues at all. I can use any engine with less than max threads, and its smooth. However, as of a few days ago I could use max threads on ChessBase without issue. I still can use max threads in fritz 17

Next Suggestion Virus Check. Third suggestion: Memory, often small RAM defects can make for an only sometimes unstable Windows. 4. Look for a Diagnostic tool for your own processor.

I did scan all three computers for viruses, but none were found. I feel like it has to be something in ChessBase since its affecting 3 different computers

Maybe in CB16 under options Engines the parameter Intelligent CPU-use is activated? Then not all threads are activated for the engines. Just check this possible cause of your problem

Fritz says we are using 32 threads and I am getting good nodes. CB 16 says its using 32 threads the nodes look ok but it keeps freezing

Maybe a new installation of cb16 can help? Do you use the latest update of cb 16, it is version 22? If the Fritz 17 has no issues, at least the hardware is ok and the windows version is obviously not the problem.

Yeah, great suggestion. I was thinking the same thing. I reinstalled CB 16 same issue. I also installed CB 17 and 15. Still had the same issue. Its baffling.
