I like science fiction movies and series of all kinds, as long as the story is good. In the past I watched one or two Japanese science fiction movies and remember that I liked them very much (I don’t remember the titles, though).

Do you have any recommendation about Japanese science fiction movies and TV shows that you consider good? Thank you.

Steins Gate and Ghost in the Shell are classic recommendations. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was a pretty good watch as well. I also liked Psycho Pass so some say it loses quality after the first season.

Edit: Oh and Akira is considered to be one of the greatest Anime of all time. These are all anime though, I can‘t say anything about live-action series/movies

Ghost In The Shell (1995) is an incredibly good movie. I recommend watching it in Japanese with English subtitles, but the English dub is serviceable. It takes its time with beautiful shots and insightful dialog, split up by well directed action sequences.

If you havent already, watch Shin Godzilla.
It’s amazing. There’s a spiritual sequel coming out soon too.

^Boosting this as it’s the only non-anime suggestion atm.

I just watched this and thought it was decent. Directed by Hideaki Anno, known best for Neon Genesis Evangelion, and it’s pretty apparent. The montages of button down politicians and scientists working in sync, filing into perfectly symmetrical makeshift office spaces, and standing at attention like they’re military personnel felt very familiar. I saw a review afterwards that called it “The Dunkirk of Godzilla Movies” which I found hilariously accurate.

I’ll also throw in the very aged, but influential Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989)

Have you ever watched Yojimbo and Sanjuro?

It’s a core influence on a lot of Japanese cinema. It’s such a big deal that Hollywood by way of Spain with Italian direction turned it into basically the best western trilogy.

I remember being a kindergartener running home from the bus to be on time to watch Star Blazers. I loved it. It’s a fun story with 1970s style.

Lupin III is one of my other favorites.

Nier Automata v1.1a is really good, with a well made world and story, and the animation doesn’t fall behind. I recommend it even if you haven’t played the game. Ghost in the shell is another recommended one, it’s old but visually feels really nice with the cyberpunk aesthetics and the story is also really good.
