    left = not capitalism

    right = capitalism

    this definition has formed since more or less (…) since the french revolution and has consolidated along with capitalism itself.

      Woll, not that far back, after all the terms came later, but it was fairly set by the turn of the century.

      AFAIK, the bourgeoisie were on the left side of the national convention during the French Revolution; though the conflict between the bourgeoisie and the working class was a vital part in its failure; the bourgeoisie trying to stop progress and liquidate the very people they depended on for power once further progress conflicted with their class interests, leaving no means to fight back against the forces of reaction.

      I could be wrong, I haven’t read much about the french revolution.

      I think 1848 is where the contradiction became more prominent.
