Hanging a pice of metal on your shirt to try to combat pc viruses is like making a wish upon a star to combat gun violence in America.

Friend, it was a joke and commentary on the packaging which specifically says “may help.”

I’m not an idiot; I don’t think a decorative pin would help with tech support issues. I just thought it was funny that even the dopes selling this BS know enough to not claim it “will help” or “does help” so that they don’t get sued for false advertising. But there’s nothing illegal about saying that something might help.

Ahh gotcha. Been encountering a lot of people that genuinely think like that and jumped the gun.

Fair enough. I haven’t seen too many folks like that on Lemmy yet, but it’s only a matter of time

I used to work at a nonprofit where our server room’s fire suppression equipment consisted of a single handheld extinguisher and a “Guardian Angel of Computers” wall hanging. I once asked my boss how long it would take to restore from our offsite backup if a fire trashed the servers, and he (jokingly) asked me not to bring it up because he was trying not to think about it. (As a small nonprofit, there was obviously no budget to refit the room with an inert gas system, or anything like that.)

As a contract sysadmin at many corporations, you’d be baffled at how many don’t even consider fire suppression. Last place I showed up to work had a fucking microwave on the server rack because “it was close to the break area”.

Not having fire suppressing measures is fine if you have off-site backups and can interrupt your entire activity for several months (do I need a /s?)
