Am I misremembering or did they hand over data to law enforcement years ago?
They handed over the recovery email of a French protestor, which iirc was a Gmail account, because the recovery email isn’t encrypted. This allowed law enforcement to link the two and get access to the recovery email for what they needed. So they never handed over payment info or actual emails or anything and they had to be compelled to do it.
As a service, I think they’re actually pretty good for stuff like this. But as a company they have wack priorities and politics.
It was an Apple ID I think.
I believe Proton also warn users that their recovery email can be subpoenaed
The IP address of a protonmail user was subpoenaed by the French government. They shouldn’t have been logging it, but you can’t just ignore a subpoena or a warrant. They didn’t really have a choice in the matter.
