      It’s the sort of thing that’s been happening on the back burner for a while. As these firms have scaled back their hiring, the jobs have become less technical and more political. Facebook is going to restrict hiring to the big Ivys and “elite” state schools because they’re looking for ideological adherents rather than talented developers or architects. These jobs are becoming Sales/Marketing, Legal, and Lobbying jobs instead of software jobs.

      It sucks. But its also a red flag that the days of tech innovation at these companies is increasingly behind us. Zuck tried to do VR and hit the same ceiling as everyone else that tried it. So now he’s just going to focus on monopolizing the social media industry and maximizing the revenue he can pump out of advertisers and government contracts.

      You don’t need “diversity” (ie, a rich pool of independent minded developer talent) for that kind of work. You need a bunch of people in political clubs and with ties to wealthy (ie, WASPy) families who can keep channeling money into your pocket in exchange for your patronage.
